You must be joking. There are no accidental leaders. Biden stands atop the political cadavers of the best the Democrats had to offer. It was a hard slog every step of the way, and he succeeded against the odds, a half-assed student and the son of a used car salesman. There are no leaders who just step aside, none. For someone like Joe, for whom the presidency has been his personal multi-decade Holy Grail? It’s inconceivable.

In the world’s oldest parliamentary democracy, the record is clear - just about every Prime Minister ever to hold office ended up evicted, rather than stepped down voluntarily. Margaret Thatcher was forced out by John Major. Tony Blair was turfed by Gordon Brown. And these are two of the most popular British politicians within living memory. There’s a reason for Enoch Powell’s observation “All political lives, unless they are cut off in midstream at a happy juncture, end in failure, because that is the nature of politics and of human affairs.”
