A Delta Airlines flight was diverted to New York City after passengers and crew, including both pilots, were served moldy chicken, a traveler has revealed.
Nancy Kirchoff, 65, was on the Amsterdam bound flight with her husband when it made an emergency landing at JFK Airport in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The pilot announced they were turning around because there was 'some type of food issue and people were sick', Kirchoff told DailyMail.com.
'They said they saw some mold on the chicken,' she added. 'I asked if anyone had gotten sick and they told us no one had been affected, but the pilots both ate the chicken.'
Medics met the plane after it landed at JFK and aid was provided to 14 passengers and 10 flight crew, all of whom declined to receive medical attention.
The A330 plane, which had 277 customers on board, departed from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport just before 11pm Tuesday.
The flight crew decided to divert to NYC after it was discovered that a portion of the in-flight meal service had been spoiled, a Delta spokesperson told DailyMail.com.
'We were probably halfway to Amsterdam, around Nova Scotia and starting to cross ocean when the pilot came on and said there was some type of food issue,' Kirchoff recalled.
She said that the flight attendants then 'came around to each row and asked if everyone was feeling good or sick.'
That's when she asked the crew about the food issue and was allegedly told that mold was discovered on the chicken. She also claims the flight attendants disclosed that both pilots had eaten the meal.

PB& J sandwiches hardly ever get moldy
I've read that too. That strategy wouldn't work well in our domestic market. It might be more of an influence in the international market.
Even then, China would have to work very hard to develop a reputation beyond the one they have for cheaply made items like the ones you find at Harbor Freight.
If they're involved, I would expect that to be their angle. They don't (as a country) have quite as putrid a reputation in the third world as they have here.
Note that this is largely speculation on my part.
Their primary advantage is that they have all the time and resources that any company in a free enterprise situation lacks. Their primary disadvantage is that their aircraft industry is based on making copies and clones of other designs.
Moldy chicken
Pollo boy. If it’s not one wing it’s another..
I thought that also....
Obviously this crew was chicken for turning around.
If they had really kept abreast of the situation, they could have just winged it.
Should have had the lasagna.
Pilots should know better than to eat airline food.
“I was on the Delta flight where 24 people fell ill including both pilots… after they served moldy chicken”
They must have been quite hungry to eat moldy chicken. Hope they learned their lesson and eat BEFORE getting on the plane.
My younger son is a Delta Captain. He packs his own food.
I remember back in the day when I was in Grade School Mom would pack My Lunch in a brown paper bag. A sandwich with cheese and some meat (Carl Buddig sliced ham, chicken, roast beef, homemade chicken salad) on white bread, chips or pretzel sticks, an apple and I had a Nickel for milk in that little carton. She would make it the night before and put it in the refrigerator until I was on the way out the door to school at 07:30 for the walk to school (uphill both ways) I think we had lunch at 11:00. Never got sick from lunch.
I grew up eating Airline food since Dad worked for AA and We traveled quite a bit. There was food that I didn’t like what it was but I don’t remember ever getting sick from eating it. Back then in the 60’s - 70’s there were one or very few complaints about it IIRC. Back then they even gave Us real flatware with sharp knives !!!
Over, Over. Ha?
Over, Over. Huh?
What’s our vector Victor?
Huh??
LOL
