Not many know that 'moonshine' really started under Pres George Washington and the Whiskey Rebellion. The distillers paid up in respect to Washington but many moved into the woods and migrated south into the mountains and pine forests.
Starting in the 60's the enterprise was crowded by organized crime; moonshine became a dangerous and unhealthy commodity. Old battery casings were used as condensers, dead skunks and raccoons were found in the mesh curing tanks (and thrown out, but that is all) and lead piping and tubing were used. Blindness was one serious side effect to tainted 'shine - plus death, of course.
In later years I think the term used for pure 'shine was "copper", meaning all was done cleanly. Past moonshiners felt that they were only exercising their rights as free folks and, while they thought that they might be breaking someone's law, they persisted as their forefathers in Ireland, etc. When ATF caught them on site they didn't resist and promised to show up in court if released on their own recognizance.
Air surveillance has probably done a lot to curb the 'extra legal' enterprise plus tracing large sugar sales - but country folk are deviously clever. 😄

38 years ago when we started building our new house out in the hills around Nashville we found the remains of 2 stills on our property.
Then, in 2010 we had that huge flood. We were helping deliver supplies to people who were stranded several counties away. A friend of ours doing a delivery got stopped by an area of flooding. He stood there looking at it and a guy in a truck came up and asked what he was doing. When he explained where he was trying to take the supplies, the trucker said “I’ll get you there”. They took off, down back roads and across fields and over hills. They dropped off the supplies and my friend thanked him and asked how he knew how to get there. The trucker replied “ I’m and ILD. ..... Independent Liquor Distributor.”
