The time to get a tetanus vax is after stepping on a rusty nail with sneakers at a farm. DH got one after that. He was fine. I researched tetanus and it is NOT a easy death, and there is no cure. Not everyone dies from it but most do, iirc. Tetanus vax ONLY if warranted.

Object need not be rusty. Rust has nothing to do with the bacterium that causes tetanus, Clostridium tetani. This bacterium is found in the feces of certain mammals such as horses and cattle and makes its way into the soil. When an injury occurs that breaks the skin, such as stepping on a nail, which then comes into contact with the infected soil, tetanus develops.
