I thought that an “irrational” number was the square root of a negative number, and could only be expressed as a polynomial equation.

square root of a negative number is “imaginary” ...

SQRT(-1) = i

unless you’re an electrical engineer.

then

SQRT(-1) = j

because “i” is current.
