:-) The store where I worked used an old computer system. I doubt stores use that kind of system now, but that experience taught me a lesson.

As customers, we all know the price to the penny, right? If we’re charged incorrectly, we’re all mathematicians at the customer service desk. The math is quick and easy in our heads.

But, on the other side of the counter, when we’re responsible for the store’s money, there’s an element of stress. We have to worry about thieves and flimflam artists.

As a customer, I once patiently explained something simple to a store manager for half an hour. She was always quick and bright. She could see the price on her computer. But, that day, she just looked confused. I didn’t get angry because I could see she was stressed out that day.

That one time, when I was ringing up a customer, I was the one whose brain froze. After the price disappeared, the customer said she changed her mind. Now, she wanted to give me a larger bill, some smaller bills, and some change, and she said I should give her a certain amount back. When I stopped to think, she got angry, and my brain shut down.

Of course, it doesn’t explain everything. Maybe some cashiers really don’t know how to count change.
