At least 500,000 half and quarter German Jews served in Hitler's Wehrmacht. They had their own reasons for doing so. Some has served in WWI. Some had inter-married, and turned their back on their Jewish heritage. Some believed that if they served in the military, that it would help their Jewish relatives back home. And they all served, despite Hitler having stripped them all of their German citizenship. The soldiers that served Hitler, swore an oath to Hitler, not to Germany. Many believed that if Germany won the war, that Hitler would give them their citizenship back, but in reality, Hitler already had plans to get rid of them too.
Erhard Milch was a half-Jew or Mischling on his father's side. He served Germany in WWI in an artillery unit, and rose to the rank of Lieutenant, then later transferred to the Imperial Air Force. Milch joined the Nazi Party in 1929.
In WWII, he served as Goering's Generalfeldmarschall, overseeing the development of the German Air Force. When the Gestapo began investigating Milch's family history, Goering put a stop to it, and had Milch's mother submit an affidavit that Milch's real father was her Uncle. In 1944, despite Goering having protected him from the Gestapo, Milch sided with Himmler and Goebbels to convince Hitler to remove Goering as head of the Luftwaffe. Hitler refused, and once Goering found out about Milch's complicity, he removed him from his positions. Milch end up working under Albert Speer for a while, then he was relegated to the Reserves after being injured in a car accident. As the war wound down, he was captured by the British, and tried as a war criminal in Nuremberg, and found guilty on two counts in 1947. He was sentenced to life imprisonment, but like many other convicted Nazis, he was released after only 15 years, and allowed to live the rest of his life in Germany.
