Yes they did. However Germany didn't blow up Nord Stream II, America did and torpedoed Germany's economy. Germany didn't impose sanctions on oil and gas that choked Germany out, America did. Given how crappy the U.S. treats its own citizens why did the Germans think that they would not get a dose of the same medicine? Also, Germany is NOT a sovereign country, they are a bitch proxy state, as past and recent history proves.

An exercise for you - do the work - what financial effect did the switch from Russian NG to LNG have? What effect did this, the provable financial difference, have on German GDP?

LNG is expensively liquified with refrigeration and delivered via ships, not pipelines and is inherently more expensive than a dedicated NG pipeline. Germany’s energy costs went up with LNG.

Still, it might not have been the best tactic: if your allies or proxies fear you, they will desert you in a conflict as soon as the going gets tough.
