That was my first thought! Parents in no way should go to interview like the first day of kindergarten!

If I had asked one or both of my parents to go to a job interview with me when I was young they would have laughed in my face.

Of course it would have been difficult since we were on opposite coasts.

I’m thinking it *must* have been asked such that a parent having ever driven the kiddo to an interview—or been in the room during a virtual interview—must have counted?!?

When my oldest son graduated, he had a tough time interviewing. I would do a debrief after the interview to help him sharpen his skills. I never accompanied him on an interview. I did help him build his resume.

Finally, we got to the heart of the matter. Despite all of my teaching, he got it into his head that employers should be selling him on the company.

I set him straight, in pretty brutal terms. His job was to find a job, land the job, and sell himself because they would toss his resume and find an equally qualified candidate with a better attitude. Employers don’t care about you as a person. You are there to do THE JOB.

Two weeks later, he was employed full time. Four months later, he got a $2K merit bonus. After 6 months, he got a $10K raise. They are talking about promoting him with a $25K bump in pay (almost six figures).

He is extremely smart, focused, talented, and hardworking. He just needed a good swift kick in the pants and an attitude adjustment.
