Spandex usually comes with a padded seat. Riding in hiking shorts gets very painful after a while. I ride between 5 and 7 hours a week and, believe me, the spandex with a padded seat makes a big difference.
Spandex is also cool.
Despite what people think, it is a functional choice.

Well, I see now why you bikers like the spandex...Thanks for the info...I just figured a lot wore it because it looks “professional”...I was mistaken...Those are good reasons to wear it....
