CBS 8 is Working For You to find out where our recyclables actually end up.
This comes after a CBS 8 viewer conducted an experiment and reached out to us with some alarming findings.
Kevin Grold says his plastic water bottle ended up at a landfill in Riverside.
Many of us, like Grold, are conscious of doing our part, by putting recyclables in the blue bin. Grold says it was disheartening to see.
"It's my way of appreciating nature and giving back, so if I leave it a little cleaner, then it's a good thing," Grold said, who lives in Del Mar.

The plastic recycling hoax was debunked years ago.
There are documentaries of villages in China inundated with plastic the locals would get pennies to sort through. This was back before China stopped needing to use recycled materials - they now have enough to mine/produce their own. They’d have to truck water in because the groundwater was so contaminated.
There’s still big bucks being paid to collect recyclables, but it’s a scam.
Now it’s just dumped on islands throughout the Pacific where in washes away, contributing to the microplastics scourge.
Yep. I’ve been saying for a long time that if recycling made economic sense, there would be people bidding for my garbage instead of me having to pay to get it hauled away.
They used to do that.
Yes, we have to ‘wash’ our recyclables before putting them into a separate waste container, ours is green with a yellow lid, so that the garbage company (Waste Management) can come and pick it up and take it to the same transfer station before going to the landfill..........................
And, I was attacked on another forum for calling recycling a scam.
"This man put a GPS tracker in his recycling. Here’s where it ended up."
I agree with recycling in principle, but at this point in time it is evidently no more of a science than EV's are.
Hardly any plastics can be truly recycled, and producers have known for decades: Report (2.15.24)
I understand that there is a tipping point in price of oil that makes recycling uneconomical.
Is recycling just another front-end for unaccountable government spending, aka taxpayer dollars being used to keep elite Democrats and RINOs in power?
Orwell said it best—telling the truth is a revolutionary act.
I really don’t care if anything is recycled or not, just as long as they pick up the barrels and take them off somewhere to bury, dump, burn or whatever...just get rid of it....
And this is news? We’ve been told for years it all goes into the landfill. The recycling is virtue signaling for the left wing extremists.
One of his best quotes: "Now that we know renewables can't save the planet are we going to keep letting them destroy it?"
So all the separating the garbage is BS? 🙄
You sort it all out... They throw it all back together again and dump it. Surprise, surprise.
The only time I have ever seen recycling work properly was back in Silicon Valley for our yard debris collection. This material never left the county. It was used to generate compost and mulch that ended up available for local residents. Some of the compost was used by the city and county for landscape projects, eliminating the need for purchases.
Our recycling is sorted (to the degree it’s actually sorted) by people working off their community service sentences. Very bad idea to put any personal information in your recycle bin. A lot of cities with recycling programs are admitting it’s a money loser especially if they accept a wide range of stuff. Aluminum and cardboard are efficient but plastics are not. Yet. It doesn’t hurt “nature” if glass is put in a landfil and new glass from raw materials is cheaper to produce than recycled, or it used to be. Aluminum and other metals are far more energy efficient to recycle.
The items in thrown in the recycling bin usually end up at the same landfill as the other trash you throw out. It’s been that way for decades. It turns out the plastic products recycling programs weren’t as profitable for cities as promised since no one is taking our trash anymore.
Many cities quietly stopped separating the trash and plastics years ago, but still require people to sort their trash and deposit it in separate containers, and charge a recycling fee. The containers then are all dumped into a garbage truck and head to the same landfill.
In an advanced nation of 330 million people all that studious washing, and the duplicating of garbage cans and the handling of 2 half filled ones instead of one full one, the use sometimes of different trucks, all that stuff adds up to tremendous numbers.
I think it is like the electric cars, no one ever looks at the total cost of the big picture.
Why waste water washing waste?
Yes, the recycling hoax was exposed years ago.
Burning trash is a much better option.
