Would Ken Paxton get through Senate confirmation?
Texas Tribune ^ | May 20 | BY JASPER SCHERER

If nominated [as AG] Paxton would need to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate. The chamber is narrowly divided along party lines, with Democrats holding a 51-49 majority. One of the most prominent Republican members, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, has been an outspoken critic of Paxton, while Paxton has openly entertained the idea of challenging Cornyn in 2026.

I cannot see it hypothetically getting through it for this post (AG) if it came up.

Best wait to take on Cornyn I feel?

It would depend on the makeup of the Senate, if the Democrats held the majority, he would not get thru, if the Republicans held the majority, he would get thru if the number was something like 55-45, you would need some cushion for the 2-3 Republicans that would fold.

Put him as head of the DOJ, but wait until November if Trump wins.

My understanding is that he doesn’t want the job. He wants to stay in Texas for his final years.

Sen. Cornyn would face an interesting dilemma.

Confirm him and he stays out of the GOP primary in 2026 or go against him and he would have a serious rival for that seat!

I would rather see Paxton as US Attorney General because I’m confident he would do a lot of cleaning up. But it sure would be great to see him in the Senate in place of Cornyn.

Cornyn needs to go. Maybe Abbott will take Cornyn seat?

Anyone who investigates election fraud scares the crap out of Congresscritters who know they were elected fraudulently. A DOJ investigation of that would force the Congress to remove illegitimately elected members. They don’t want that.

*Confirm him and he stays out of the GOP primary in 2026 or go against him and he would have a serious rival for that seat!*

Paxton could tell him that directly in the confirmation hearings. Dare Cornyn to vote against him. Heh heh.

Paxton would do the most good for by taking back Texas’ Senate seat from Washington D.C.

My read is Trump and an ever larger conservative wing of the GOP is past Constitutional niceties such as “Senate confirmations and where they hit headwinds.....will instead just appoint loyalists without portfolio to “act” in various roles, or appoint them as Czars.....

We’ve had enough of Cornyn! He needs to go ASAP. I would just hate to lose Paxton as the AG.

I tend to agree with you. The RINO squishes would probably vote against Ken Paxton. Best let him take out Cornyn in 2026.

My 2nd choice would be Mike Davis. He would be absolutely awesome in that role. He might face the same problem vis a vis confirmation though.

So Trump will need to nominate a stealth candidate who doesn’t have much of a record to criticize but who is rock solid MAGA and will clean house at the Intel agencies as well as the DOJ and prosecute the corrupt Deep State actors who perpetuated the Russia Collusion Hoax as well as the Jan 6 Fedsurrection.

I disagree.

I think that would be giving up the fight before it even begins.

Why not try both?

Appoint him, and then force the RINOs to go against Trump. Shows their true colors, and then they can be rightfully & forcibly primaried.

If the democrats are able to kill the nomination, let it be on them.

If that happens, Ken can run in 26 and kick Corbyn to the curb!

Here we go again.
That pesky constitution thingie kinda says that I get to elect my senator.
I think that the state constitution thingies have arrangements to replace a senator if he either dies or is removed from office.
I don’t recall reading that the senate can accept or reject ANY senator that was either elected or selected.

But, that’s just me
