Old age slips up on you in a snap of a finger

Posted on 06/09/2024 4:09:56 PM PDT by Jim Robinson

I don't remember when I got old, it just happened. One day I turned around and discovered I was an old man. Thinking back on it I think it was after my wife died. When Sheila died it took all the wind out of my sails. I'm now adrift, without rudder, without anchor and without a North Star. The bilge water is creeping up and threatening to put the fires out for good.

If you've ever experienced being dead in the water in the middle of an ocean, that's how I'm feeling right now. It's a surreal feeling.

'O God, thy sea is so great and my boat is so small.'

“When you go through deep waters, I will be with you.” Isaiah 43

I prayed that Scripture, once, when I drifted too far from shore, swimming.

The ocean spit me right out, back on to shore.

God will (continue to) bless you, and, keep you, Jim Robinson.

Everyone wants to go to Heaven, but no one wants to die.

For me it came down to advice from a Clint Eastwood movie, "a man has to know his limitations", and I would add that he must accept that he has limitations that he once did not have.

Another occasion involved an eighty-eight-year-old woman I used to carry to church when her ride wasn't available. She was an amazing lady to talk with, many stories, she had at one time worked with Mother Teresa. In driving to church, she would tell stories in her soft voice and I would strain n to hear in my bad ear. Her words that I repeat today after concluding a story of her life were, it all went by so fast.

One more thing that stayed in my mind was from another movie, The Straight Story, in which I learned the worst thing about getting old, and it is

In summary. Getting older is still better than the alternative.

I admit that all the $#@! that happened at the end of the Trump days (BLM etc) and now all the social changes with the regressives and Biden, I say to my 73 year old self often “this is not how I thought my last decade would be”

I have aged, spirit wise, greatly in the last 4 years.

Old age does arrive quickly. One day you are running non-stop managing several projects at once, being active and ‘in charge’, and the next day you’re tired, in constant pain, and make the decision that you really can’t do it “all” anymore so you are going to just sit a while.

At first, you worry about about not fulfilling all your obligations and make excuses, promising yourself you’ll get back to it next week. Then suddenly you don’t care and just say screw it, it’s someone else’s turn.

But JimRob, one thing you have done that has carried on for decades and will carry on for decades to come, is bring to conservatives Free Republic. During the time of those “decades ago” you allowed like-minded people to come together, share information, and give each other courage knowing that we were not the only ones. We soon found we were not the only ones who were upset with the direction our country was taking. We have been able to get together in a friendly forum, share information, and work to take back our country.

So, no matter the future we know that we at FR have worked together to bring a little bit of hope for our children and/or grandchildren. There are more of us than there is of them. Good and God will win out at the end. That He has promised us.

I can only hope that I can accomplish 1% of what you have for America.

I’m so sorry for your loss, Jim.
Please know that we love you, and that hurt/lost
feeling that you have takes time to deal with.

Hubby and I will celebrate our 41rst anniversary soon.
If I lost him. I would be as you are now.

Please carry on, for your beloved wife, but also for your sons.
Sheila would not want this for you, Jim!
It is easier said then done, I know.
You have had such a huge impact on my life!
I have met so many wonderful freepers here and
the friendships have become life long.

You have made such a HUGE mark on America, and have brought
patriots together here-that’s tough to beat!

You have done SO much for us, even when we knew that you weren’t feeling great!
Thank you, Boss!
Feel free to freepmail me if you ever need to talk

With love and thank you!
Ms.B

Jim, we’re not as old as we will be in 10 years. Today can mark a new beginning for you. Take inventory of your treasures and keep praying. I believe you will turn this feeling around and rebound into greater happiness. Ask our Lord for help and He will grant it to you.

Yeah, we get old. I notice it now in many ways.

Your post though makes me think this:

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;

his mercies never come to an end;

they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Which appropriately is from the book of Lamentations (Chapter 3)

Hang in there, Jim. The LORD has your back...

“Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He, I am He Who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.” (Isaiah 46:4)

GOD isn’t finished with you yet!!!

It's perhaps not the most tactful meme...

Yeah, losing wife plus getting old is rough...

But Jesus is waiting...

Best wishes to you.
