Norman Jack "Dusty" Kleiss (March 7, 1916 – April 22, 2016) was a dive-bomber pilot in the United States Navy during World War II. He was the only pilot to hit three Japanese ships with bombs during the Battle of Midway.

The names of the Japanese carriers are interesting--Akagi (red castle), Sōryū (blue dragon), Hiryū (flying dragon) and Kaga (a province in Japan).

The battle damage to Shōkaku and the aircraft losses of Zuikaku at the Battle of the Coral Sea prevented both ships from participating in the Battle of Midway the following month.

If the air crew of the Shokaku transferred to the Zuikaku and the ship sailed with the Kido Butai, the outcome might have been different.

Also Midway Island is never given enough credit. Although they failed to hit any targets, their continual attacks cost the Japanese valuable time to rearm and recover aircraft.

If I’m not mistaken a Midway PBY did score a torpedo hit on an oiler and the first strikes on the cruisers Mikuma and Mogami were from SBD Dauntless dive bombers from Midway.
