Alvin Bragg’s Anti-Democracy Verdict
Compact ^ | Sohrab Ahmari

Posted on 05/31/2024 9:33:40 AM PDT by definitelynotaliberal

I don’t give a damn about the byzantine and stupid details of the New York hush-money case that resulted in Donald Trump becoming the first US president convicted of a felony. Neither should you. Here’s what matters: Ever since 2016, Democrats, the security establishment, and their media allies have sought to nail the Orange Bad Man, and the effort finally paid off on Thursday. But in truth, it was American democracy that got nailed.

The verdict obtained by district attorney Alvin Bragg—who could’ve gotten a Manhattan jury to convict Trump of starting the Chicago Fire—represents a decisive step forward for the forces of depoliticization: for those who seek to forestall authentic democratic contestation; and to treat one side in our big debates not as fellow citizens with different opinions, but as a “problem” to be treated using the business end of law enforcement and the security apparatus.

Bragg’s case was, by many accounts, convoluted and weak. But even if it had been stronger, this prosecution would have come as part of a larger anti-populist project going back to Trump’s first term. You’ve probably forgotten most of the elements of that project, and who can blame you? Each day would bring some devastating new “revelation”—later revealed to be factitious—that was supposed to take down Trump. After a while, they all blended together.

There was the Steele Dossier, filled with false allegations about a Moscow “pee tape.” There was the falsehood, first published by McClatchy, that Trump’s onetime lawyer Michael Cohen had visited Prague to receive instructions from his FSB handlers. There was Buzzfeed’s equally false claim that Trump had suborned Cohen to commit perjury before Congress. There was the mountain of bullshit known as Russiagate, which only grew taller even as special counsel Robert Mueller gave the lie to the underlying claims. There was George Papadopoulos, who did something or other (remember him?). There were not one, but two impeachment trials.

A verdict in New York, and possibly another one in Georgia, should and will be ignored by those of us who care about preserving democracy. It is impossible for us to accept that Bragg’s exertions were anything but a continuation of the elite lawfare—bolstered by Big Tech censorship and a savagely partisan media—that targeted Trump for the “crime” of winning an election.

Meanwhile, Bragg’s borough is being drowned by an ongoing crime wave, owing not least to his anti-anti-crime approach. As a vulgar Persian proverb advises, “Wipe your own ass before worrying about others.”

Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly implied that Trump was convicted in his second impeachment trial.

Bragg is a hero today, for the democrats, because he did what the Washington democrats failed to do, and that is, to find Trump guilty of something.

No democrat had been as bold as Bragg, and today they’re all celebrating the guilty verdict on Trump. That verdict may not last long after the appeals processes are done, but, Bragg has a right to brag, and so do democrats. Republicans would never do anything as crazy and radical as going after a former president, and democrats count on it. Trump had a chance for going after Hillary, and he decided against it, so, when it come to crazy and radical lawfare, democrats will always have the advantage. Republicans will always be the adults and the ‘good guys’ when it comes to political fighting, but then, that’s giving huge advantage to democrats, who will use that advantage to always get their ways. Good guys finish last.

“convoluted and weak”

Well it was nothing compared to the Grand Inquisitor’s jury “instructions”.

Just convict him of any crime, pick one - and staple it to the accounting label allegation and Voila! You izza fell-on.

We the Americans fought the damn Spanish for hundreds of years and defeated them twice outright: 1848 and 1898. Now they stream in and bring their inverted illogic with them.

…..they opened a huge can of worms that will begin eating them. Today’s Democratic “ leadership” is a juvenile ship of fools that always end up shooting themselves in the foot.

Hate always destroys the hateful, the best part is they aren’t smart enough to realize they just committed suicide….they are the walking dead.

I wonder how many of these people will be in prison after Trump is elected.

“Democracy”, to the Democrat Party, means “perpetual one-party rule by the Democrat Party by forced imposition of Marxist and Maoist policies, with periodic sham elections to maintain a charade of legitimacy, while positions of power are always determined behind the scenes and the ‘elected’ are merely foot-soldiers to take the heat and do the dirty work.”

Does anybody truly believe that the appeals judge won’t be as corrupt as Merchan? That they’re not going to farm this to the most activist judge in Manhattan they can find?

It would be wise for this thing to be looking over its shoulder even when it sleeps.
There’s this certain thing called NYC “karma” that kinda floats around there quite often.

He did so by employing a judge who bent the rules of conducting a trial beyond recognition.

Cohen said that he billed the payment as legal services. Unless you believe he was lying about that, that means that they recorded as legal fees payments they believed to be legal fees.

Why wasn’t Trump’s accountant Weisselberg called? He’s already in prison. It would be easy to get him to testify. What would he have said that they didn’t want the jurors to hear?

If, as the cult alleges, the underlying crime was illegal election payments, then why did Merchan disallow testimony from a leading expert on election law, a former chairman of the FEC? Obviously, because he would have testified that (for at lest two reasons) Trump’s payments were not illegal under the campaign law Bragg was misusing.

And the jurors were doxxed. a dangerous, if imlicit, threat.

Even David Boies said the prosecution was questionable, along with Dershowitz, Turley, McCarthy and other credible, nonpartisan legal experts.

But the Democrat cult is so blinded by their objective HATE for the man that they’ve been trying to do this since he came down that escalator.

Plenty of reversible error (or deliberate error) here. But the Democult is acting like it’s party time. Shameful. #TheyCallItCompassion
