Veterans are veterans—some lived and some died. We should celebrate all veterans and through that celebration encourage citizens to join the service, not to necessarily die but to serve. Don’t disrespect veterans just because they didn’t die or didn’t serve in combat roles or whatever excuse you might want to state to diss a veteran. Well, actually that is what Veteran's Day is for, to honor those who served their nation in battle.
Memorial Day is to pay our respects for those who gave their lives in defense of their nation.
So, perhaps you should apologize to Az Joe?
"Well, actually that is what Veteran's Day is for, to honor those who served their nation in battle."
Not true. A Veteran need not have been involved in "battle". Just have served honorably in whatever job they had.
