I don’t know the protocol for approach to Norfolk Naval Shipyard or Norfolk Naval base but I promise you there is a designated sub lane there wherein approaching subs have to be on the surface for a distance out, staying on the line, otherwise they can get their assessunk. Even if they’re nukes they won’t be un-identified for long.
Someplace nearby is a sailor with his muffs on, checking the hull noise pattern. And that has to be the densest SOSUS grid on the planet. Then one has to wonder if the two (?) subs know each other. If true, two in the same sector would be a really weird tactic?
