Hitting 150 mph is tough. Stopping from 150 mph is even more punishing. Which is why we decided to do both, back to back.

“Not sure what type of tires were used in the 427.”

They weren’t slicks.

I think it was tried about a decade ago but they were more worried about trashing the car than making the time. Who wants to destroy a 1m+ car engine if it goes wrong. But they did try it think the speed sensors failed in the middle of test as they did not want to mount the sensors into the aluminum body. They were strapped/taped to the side and did not fair well.

Please remember I’m going from memory of an article a read a looong time ago so I may have messed the story over.

Have owned BMW M3's and M5's...but have never taken them over 91mph...and then only for a short quarter mile burst at that speed.

What's the point? More fun to cruise at 80mph...in 3rd gear...in "sport mode".

I’m a doofus. You’re right it was 0-100-0 on that test. So there are a lot of cars now that could beat it. But to do that in the 1960s was an awesome feat.

I was on I-75 going 90 and getting passed. In my wife’s GX460 wishing I was in my Roush.

The video I posted was done with factory stock tires.

Understood. I have seen Cobras race in the Vintage/Historic series. They are loud and look like they would be fun to drive.

I don’t have time to do more research but in 2015 Car and Driver tested a 1967 Corvette Stingray 427 at 13.6 in the 1/4 mile and 12.3 0-100 on 7.75-15 Firestone bias-plies.

The real ones were either 289 or 427 Fords.

Correct - the 427 S/C variant did 0-100-0 in around 12 seconds, IIRC. Held on to that record time for a long time, too.

Goodyear Blue Streaks, probably. Predecessor of the Goodyear Eagle race tires.

I drove an Alfa 156 turbo diesel - standard rental car - on the Autostrada in Italy routinely at 200 kmph. Sweetheart car and no big deal. Just flowing with traffic.

It wasn’t a variant. It was the original 427.

Even more impressive, given the slightly smaller brakes on the “street” model. I can never recall if it was Dan Gurney or Ken Miles that made the lowest timed run - but either way, the driver was probably a big part of the result.

My father was “ stoplight” street racing in in the 60s. He was against some street rod and my dad was driving in a 289 cobra. My dad whipped him. When they met up my dad said the other drive knew he was beat when my dad shifted into second around 50 mph.

"...When they met up my dad said the other drive knew he was beat when my dad shifted into second around 50 mph."

Hmmm...In the M3, if I were to wait until I was going 50mph to shift into 2nd gear, I'm quite sure I would have blown the engine. Never took the chance to find out!;)
