I'm deeply involved in AI in my current company. While it is not my described role, I feel it is stupid to wait to be assigned a task. I feel it is best to see an opportunity, and seize it. Therefore, I am now my division's AI Advocate.
I recently put together a use-case, ensured it worked, and made it available to the company. During a town hall, I continuously mentioned the use case (in the chat) and got well over 25 requests for more information.
The use-case is how to record a Zoom meeting, how to create a transcript for it, and how to have our in-house AI create summaries of the meeting. It works, and works well, so I produced an instructional video on how to accomplish it. I was noticed by the Associate VP in charge of AI Engineering. I suspect I will transition to his team sometime in 2025.
All this has got me thinking: How will AI transform society? Here are my current predictions.
I also see a long-term extremely dangerous trend: Vast increases in human incompetence. As people are replaced by AI and robotics, how can they hope to retain their skillset in their chosen profession? If there are far fewer software engineers, who will be able to truly assess and proof AI-generated code? If robotic units take over such things as plumbing or welding, how can humans hope to retain skills in these practices? What happens if AI quits on us, and we have billions of people who no longer have the skill to perform their formerly-chosen profession?
I am not considering Superintelligent AI in these predictions. Upon the advent of ASI, all bets are off and we have zero idea how that will unfold.
Very “Deus Ex” (the now classic video game.”
Not exactly prognostic of our current situation but “uncanny” would be accurate. A globalist conspiracy uses a virus to effect total control, and the protagonist and an AI muddle with their plans.
In the end, and while this is a spoiler for the game it’s 24 years old so it’s like a spoiler for the The Matrix movie, things either fall apart entirely, get run by a reshuffled elite, or the AI runs everything.
I could see variants of that choice playing out in real life, except not one global determinant but regional or factional happenings. There are already too many strains on the western/global system and too much strength in alternates like BRICS, PRC, and that pesky reality of Muhammedism for the current would-be-elites to get their way in the long run.
That explains why they don't drive to the grocery store and instead have their food delivered.
Most likely, it will just change the nature of jobs. AI deals with probabilities, it doesn’t think. It’s impressive, it ‘looks’ like it is thinking but it isn’t. Yes, it has neural networks, simulating how our brain neurons work - yet it can’t come up with original ideas.
When it can is when I become more worried.
That said, anyone that works in an area where there’s lots of text and writing, on topics that don’t change much might be under threat. E.g. lawyers. Even the ‘standard care’ that doctors perform. These things have passed the Bar Exam and medical certification exams.
IMHO...it’ll, most likely, be ‘creative destruction’ just like other technologies. It will enable scalability of certain jobs that don’t scale well.
Programmed by man as an information platform = disaster!!
Terminator. Skynet- how could I forget that one?
I’m thinking we’ve opened Pandora’s Box, and good luck trying to control it….
Prediction: By 2026.01.01.0001 your VP of AI will be replaced by AI with a white patriarchal straight male AI and by 2026.01.01.000101 your position will be rendered obsolete by a black lesbian transgender AI who came over on the mayflower.
Maybe AI will be the AntiChrist…..?
Thought-provoking thread. “I think therefore I am”. I don’t think? I ain’t.
Leave it to good ole’ Laz to ask the tough questions and post the tough threads.
Rapid expansion of surveillance by government, private companies, and foreign entities.
Mass psychological manipulation. AI will easily seduce and guide people to right-think.
Political power is up for grabs. Whoever controls Big AI will control the world political system. The people most driven to acquire this power will be Leftists warlords like Soros.
This will lead to world dictatorship.
The elites will not need an underclass. The elites will be further separated from society at large. Underclass factions will be turned against each other.
“ The startups (OpenAI especially but others too) are hyping it to up their stock prices. ”
I meant valuation, not necessarily stock prices but it will eventually come to that.
From my experience: we drive to Chicago to see our daughter and son in law. We don’t go there often, so we use GPS to help us remember. On the way home, I don’t need it, but my wife insists on repeating everything the GPS voice says. My response-“ I can read the signs, shut that thing off…”
How far are people willing to go with this? Even our own conservative principles are being threatened. Self reliance for one.
I’ll be fine until some very sophisticated robots hit the streets who can maintain and repair rotating equipment found in steel, paper and biomass mills. After that happens, I just hope the universal income is based off what your worth to the country was. I make a very good living; thanks be to God. I’m educated, I worked my butt since the age of thirteen, retired military and I should not be paid the same as a good for nothing.
You know, I don’t see the Terminator scenario as the biggest danger. I see the abandonment of skills (by humans, to AI) as the biggest dangers.
Right on the mark!
I like your font at the top, by the way…🙂
The largest impact may be from the unintended consequences, the unknown unknowns, for which we may not be prepared. Some will be blessings, some curses.
Cultural divides will change and embiggin based on the use of new and more leisure time. Some will pursue meaning and purpose through acquisition of knowledge and skills, even though they don’t need to because of AI. Others will abandon pursuit of meaning and purpose in favor of numbness and self-destruction.
There will be conflict over control of the controlling AI, possibly to include violence, likely to include one group’s AI trying to eliminate or consolidate another group’s AI.
