I’d say classic rock is in danger largely because corporate radio stations hammering the same 20-40 songs and nothing else.from coast to coast.
Very few independent stations left to play the immense catalog of material. And bring interest.
Even the XM stations with niche audiences play far too little a selection.
Blame the Telecommunications Act of 1996.
There was a provision that allowed corporate consolidation of of radio markets around the country. All the program managers at these small stations were fired and programming decision went to corporate headquarters.
That eliminated any chance for unknown acts to get on the air.
One of the last great rock stations, KSHE in St. Louis, has a 4-hour show on Sunday mornings called KSHE Klassics. Nothing but deep tracks and forgotten gems. It’s free on their app.
I remember 1970 KSHE-95 REAL ROCK RADIO when I got and FM-Stereo adapter for my 8-track tape player.
They played entire albums.
John Barleycorn is dead.
Casey Jones you'd better watch your speed.
Some of the classic rock is so overplayed on the radio it makes me puke. Even though I’ve played in a few classic rock bands I’m totally over classic rock. Playing it for money is one thing, but other than that I have no use for any of it.
Our local “classic rock” station plays the same 50 songs all day long.
