GROOM, Texas (KVII) — The couple killed in a shootout with law enforcement on I-40 near Groom was transporting more than $3 million worth of cocaine purchased from a Mexican drug cartel.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office in Tennessee said it began investigating Edward Stevenson, 60, and Elizabeth Stevenson, 51, through undercover drug buys.

On Thursday, detectives executed a search warrant at their home in Cookeville, about 90 minutes east of Nashville.

They seized 3/4 of a pound of methamphetamine, fentanyl, multiple firearms, body armor and ammunition.

At the time of the search, detectives received information that the Stevensons were driving a semi-truck back through Texas with illegal drugs and were armed.

According to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, the couple said they would die by “suicide by cop” if law enforcement attempted to stop them.

I knew a guy (a friend of a friend) who decided to earn some extra money in retirement by bringing drugs up from Florida to New York.

Well, that's the story the cops told.

The cartels no doubt ratted them out. Removes competition, and gives the popo a chance to burnish their image. Win-Win.

Have felt, for many years, that drug laws are only price supports for the cartels. Were I king for a day, I'll legalize all drugs, and require that 8 oz bags of pure drugs be sold over the counter at true cost of manufacture. About $5 per pound.

There would be a sharp, temporary spike in ODs, but it is not as if they were working on an FTL drive or a cure for cancer. No great loss.

I tend to agree. It’s not common knowledge that drugs were legal until Drug Prohibition in 1914.

The years before that were some of the fastest-growing the nation has ever seen. Like alcohol, drugs were not and are not a cause of national decline. No one is forced to become a substance abuser.

I once knew an airline pilot, who told me he had been offered 500k to fly a DC-3 from Mexico to Arizona, back in the 70’s.
He knew better.

“They obviously did not want to get caught by law enforcement, but probably, most likely, was more afraid of the (Mexican drug) cartel than they were being caught.”

Trash was taken out.

Shouldn’t the headline read ‘transporting $3m in cocaine FOR drug cartel’?

They didn’t steal the cocaine, from the cartel .... they were transporting it FOR the cartel.

A skydiving business I frequented in the late 70’s sold their DC-3 to an “oil company” to use in Alaska. They got a call three months later that it had been found in the Everglades. That’s some really bad navigation.

They needed a “semi-truck’ to transport $3 million in cocaine?

When was the last time the Coors got got in a shootout with the Miller guy?

Or, when was the last time a family lost their lives by an intoxicated driver?
