LOL Yes. I had this experience. Their sales technique is highly effective. After a long, HOT tour of the Taj, they brought me to a shop to watch the skilled craftsmen. And then, into a COLD room. Offered me a cold pop, and started chatting with their "new friend"... me. After a few minutes, they start showing beautiful pieces for sale. I ended up buying an inlaid octagon that was about 16" wide. It's beautiful. It cost me about $300, after several minutes of negotiation from $500.
When I returned to my hotel, I was shocked to see one that looked just like it in a gift shop that was only $100. But, upon a closer look, the hotel version was a poor replica. It was thinner, lighter, and quality of workmanship was very poor in comparison. I'm still VERY happy with my purchase. It sits on the bar above my sink where the morning sun shines through the back. It reminds my of one of my most cherished visits anywhere in the world.
The day I visited was a Monday, and was the 75th anniversary if India's independence. Every hour, all day.... all cars would stop and everyone would stand at attention while the National Anthem was played. It was quite a sight to see.
Thanks Red Badger.
