LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested by Louisville Metro Police on Friday morning after trying to drive into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club, the site of this week's PGA Championship.
Traffic outside the golf course had been stopped after a man was struck and killed by a shuttle bus around 5 a.m. ET.
Scheffler faces charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. Scheffler was released at 8:40 a.m. ET and headed to Valhalla. The assault charge is a felony; the others are misdemeanors.
Scheffler's attorney said it would be up to Scheffler whether he plays today in the second round.
According to ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the incident, Scheffler was trying to drive around the crash scene on a median. A police officer instructed Scheffler to stop, but Scheffler continued to drive about 10 to 20 yards toward the entrance.
At one point, an officer attached himself to the side of Scheffler's car. Scheffler stopped his car as he turned into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club.
After about 20 to 30 seconds, Scheffler rolled down his window to talk to the officer. The officer grabbed Scheffler's arm to pull him out of the vehicle, according to Darlington. The officer reached inside the vehicle to open the door, and once Scheffler was pulled out, he was pushed against the car and placed in handcuffs.
Darlington was standing at the entrance when Scheffler was detained. Darlington said Scheffler turned to him and asked, "Can you help?"
According to Darlington, an officer instructed him to back away.
“
How far did he drag the cop?”
“At one point, an officer attached himself to the side of Scheffler’s car.”
If this is accurate, he didn’t “drag” anybody anywhere.
Cop over reacted, made a big mistake. You don’t jump on a car like he did. It’s a golf tournament, not the border, wait, illegal border crossers are waved thru.
Oh man, this is going to go on Scottie’s permanent record . How will he ever make a decent living now? Ha, ha. Look for the liberal media to pile on... he’s Christian so...
no biggie
Charges will be dropped, maybe a small fine, cop over reacted.
The cop had no way of knowing who the guy was or what his intentions were.
I hope they throw the book Scheffler.
In the meantime I’m sure Rory McIllroy will be grateful to be out of the headlines for a while.
Note to the PGA: Nice bunch of guys you got there.
PGA doesn't run events as good as the LIV, maybe they should just disband the league.
Look I like this guy but when a person attaches themselves to the car someone is getting dragged. Initial reports on fox was he was dragged for 10 ft.
Yeah I doubt he’ll get a pass like tiger
> Scheffler was trying to get around the area by driving over a median. <
I’m no longer reflexively pro-cop for many reasons. But anyone driving over a median can reasonably be assumed to be drunk or high on something.
In a situation like that, a cop must act rather quickly. So I’ve got to assign a big chunk of the blame here to Scheffler.
Yea, he could have been a bank robber going to a golf tournament, definitely should have had swat shoot up the car for passing thru.
Yup, very vocal about his faith. I like the guy and perhaps he was not aware that the cop had attached himself to the car. From what I have heard he had no idea what was going on when the cops took him into custody.
Disobeying a cop who is trying to maintain order at a traffic accident scene is stupid. Being talented at hitting a little white ball around apparently does not confer good judgment.
Why would a cop even do that, it's a golf tournament for crying out loud, get the plate number and move on.
I might buy that except for the big magnetic "Official PGA Tournment Vehicle" placard on the car.
Unless Scottie hauled off and cold-cocked the cop (he didn't) his is going to be 1000x the black eye on LPD as it will on Scheffler or the PGA. They'd be well advised to drop it quickly and quietly.
What I want to know is the name of the officer charging him with "felony assault on a police officer." Are you prepared to testify to that? Did you want to be famous? Let's make you famous.
Scheffler had a lot of options.
He could have politely explained and asked for help.
He could have contacted the course and explained and asked for help.
Instead he loses his (bleep) and breaks the law while he’s doing it.
Book him, Dan-o.
I seriously doubt attaching yourself to a vehicle is standard curriculum in law enforcement training.....anybody that does that, cop or no assumes responsibility for the outcome IMO.
The cop was the one who had poor judgement. Seriously? Jumping on a car driving 2 mph going to a GOLF TOURNAMENT?? No, take the plate number and move on. Scottie statement - he said he proceeded as told BY police officers.
It’s less ethnicity than mindset, but the liberal “give me a thimbleful of power and I’ll abuse it before the sun goes down” seems more prevalent among certain communities.
cops overdoing their job IS a big problem in many situations but cops undergoing their job IS destroying communities that need them to just do their job in spite of the politicians and leftist media cop haters pointing fingers at them when their job IS occasionally overdone. just my 2
