A Utah school has sparked fury after removing the name of a student who died of cancer just months before graduation - despite completing all requirements.
Samantha Corey, who was battling a rare and terminal form of the disease, passed away before she could finish her senior year at American Fork High School.
As Samantha's siblings prepared to stand in her place, they were told by the district they wouldn't be permitted. Her name was also omitted from the ceremony.
It wasn't like we were wanting special treatment for her,' Kimberly Corey, Samantha's mother, said to FOX13. 'I just think we didn't want her to be deleted out of it, so it felt like, this is how it was supposed to be, and then they deleted her name and took it.' Samantha's family was distraught hearing the news, specially because Samantha had completed all of her graduation requirements before her death.
'We just would have liked to have her name be read, and her siblings wanted to walk across the stage for her. Her brother wanted to wear her hat,' Kimberly Corey said to KUTV. 'We weren't expecting a big to-do; we just don't want her to be deleted, you know.'
Samantha's journey with cancer began during her sophomore year, but she was determined to continue her education at American Fork High School during chemotherapy treatments.

Now mind you this remembrance varied from school to school but the bottom line is the child was remembered and shown respect.
And very often, a page dedicated in the yearbook.
Who ever heard of 17 or 18 year olds dying of cancer prior to 2022? đź’‰
Yes~ A “In memoriam”
Pretty low class of the school.
If we have a place called “St Jude’s Children’s Hospital” which is for cancer treatment then I figure we have a lot of kids lose their life to cancer.
cancer sucks.
What that school did was totally heartless.
A classmate of mine in high school committed suicide the summer before our senior year.
He got a full page photo in the year book despite being a drug addled psychopath.
WTF is wrong with “educators’ in this day and age?
My God, those school administrators are CRUEL and HEARTLESS. How could they do that?
Your school did a wonderful job honoring the deceased student. I don’t recall any students dying during my high school career, but we did lose a fraternity brother in college in his sophomore year. That was the first young person I knew to pass. It was really sad, especially because he was on his honeymoon in Hawaii, dove into a shallow pool, and broke his neck.
Our graduating class lost 3 students from freshman to senior year.. Each had a photo in senior yearbook. One who died his senior year, in the winter was awarded a diploma, which was given to his parents.
That decision is both unnecessarily cruel to her family and just plain odd for a school to go out of their way to appear devoid of empathy. There must be a backstory, a subplot to that decision. The article never goes any deeper than a general reporting.
What’s wrong with people. Boy, are we messed up. A child died...
They’re indoctrinators, not actually interested in teaching our children valuable life skills, but more like how to be leftist foot soldiers.
Liz you are good at this. Find the contact info for the board of education of this school so we can voice our opinion please..
thanks
“WTF is wrong with “educators’ in this day and age?”
They are a bunch of assholes just there to get a paycheck.
There I said it and would say it again.
The administrators should be ashamed of themselves. She worked hard to complete her requirements, just so she could something with her life, and that should be remembered.
A lot.
What a crappy thing to do!
It looks like now she will be recognized. Didn’t read the article, but hopefully the family will be satisfied with what the school comes up with.
