I saw that on Fox last week.....had one or two encounters with alligator snapping turtles......nasty reptile with a really bad attitude.

Quite true. In the Florida countryside, I have picked up both smallish alligators and large snapping turtles that had stopped on the road as they pondered their next move. Pound for pound, snapping turtles are nastier and usually more dangerous.
