No matter what I try, I can't get my screen background to be a black background. I'm 74 years old with cataracts and the white background just washes out the foreground text. Is there any way to make a dark background? No matter how I change my computer settings, Freerepublic still has a white background.

It sounds like you want the High Contrast setting in Windows that's used for all your open windows.

Type "High Contrast" in the "Type here to search" on your Task Bar.
Select "Turn High Contrast On or Off"
Toggle "Turn High Contrast On"

Or... Press the left Alt Key, the left Shift Key, and the Print Screen key at the same time. A pop-up will appear asking if you want to turn on High Contrast.

If it's just for a browser, each has a way to turn it on. For example in Firefox:

Tools
Settings
Type "Colors" in the "Find in Settings" box at the top
Manage Colors
Text (select white or lighter color)
Background (select black or darker color)
Uncheck "Use system colors"
Click on "OK"

At the bottom right of the screen where it says “100%” with a minus (-) square button to the left and a plus (+) button to the right, just click on the plus button to enlarge the font type on the page as much as you want to make it as easy to read the words. Use the minus button to decrease the size of the font. Works like a charm.

My advice to you is to see an ophthalmologist if you are on Medicare (or wait until you are shortly). They will confirm the cataracts and help you schedule to have them removed. There is no cost for this if you have Medicare and supplemental insurance. A simple procedure spread by about two weeks for each eye and improvement is fantastic.

I didn’t get the optional stuff. I still sometimes need reading glasses sometimes but not always.

The Contrast improvement was a life changer. I hear people doing laser can get side effects but my night vision is just like new.

My 91 year old mom has a cataract the doctor doesn’t want to remove. Is there really a reason not to remove a cataract just because a person is 91? She does like to read.

One other thing, it was 10 minutes to get the surgery. Eyes were done 2 weeks apart. The biggest pain was the drops but they work really well getting rid of the discomfort.

The eyes are still a little sensitive when I rub them.

Age might not be the issue.

Some cataract issues are more complicated.

Get a good explanation from her doctor.

Then a second opinion if needed.

BTW, a loved one older than your mom had successful cataract surgery.

Good luck to you and your mom! :-)

Using
“CTL A” to select a large area may save some time...

I’m blind in one eye and have a cataract on the other one. Doctor advises waiting as long as possible in case of problem in surgery. Rare, but sometimes happens.
