At What Point Is It Too Expensive To Watch The NFL?

The NFL is close to finalizing a deal with Netflix to carry its upcoming Christmas Day slate. That's fine. Netflix costs anywhere between $6.99 and $22.99 a month.

However, Netflix is yet another bill that fans have to pay to watch the NFL closely this season.

Let's review:

Viewers still need basic cable to watch games on CBS, NBC, Fox, ESPN, ABC and NFL Network. Did we miss any?

Cable options include YouTube TV, DirectTV, Dish, Xfinity, AT&T, Spectrum, etc. etc. On average, cable costs around $80 a month.

**SNIP**

To watch the NFL this season, you need cable (ESPN, ABC, Fox, CBS, NBC, NFL Network), Amazon Prime, Netflix, ESPN+, and Peacock. That'll cost you $112.96 a month from September to January, for a total of $451.84.

And that's if you sign up for the lowest packages each service offers.

But, wait, it's not that simple.

Fans still won't have access to whichever games they want at $112.96 a month. That price only gets you about five games a week (sometimes a few more with the occasional Saturday or Sunday morning window).

To choose the games you want, you must purchase NFL Sunday Ticket. Now sold via YouTube – good riddance, DirectTV – Sunday Ticket costs $449 (!!!) a season.

Four years ago, when bending the knee became more important than winning.

Now with the highlights on YouTube, you don’t even have to do that.

I didn’t realize I was saving so much money by ignoring the NFL. I feel much better now.

I can almost rationalize buying a new shotgun using the money I don't spend watching the NFL. I think I can swing it if I also don't watch the NBA and NHL, which I don't anyway.

When I watch old broadcasts, the one thing I notice, with all sports now, is that the presentation is much more geared towards females.

The day that anyone took a knee during the National Anthem was the last day I paid attention to the NFL.

Same here. Really, lost all interest in pro sports over 20 years ago. Too many prima donnas, too many that have never been told NO since they were 12-13 years old, and someone found out that had a “talent” for some sports. Owners wanted the local yokels to finance a new stadium, and still charge out the wahzoo to see some game. Bread and circuses are all we have now days and I have better things to do with my time.

Tried the remote after many moons of dust collecting. NHL game. The announcer stated that both anthems would be played after the next commercial break. *CLICK* Done.

It’s not that important. I heard to other day that the various rights for the next NFL contract will be north of $100 Billion.

NBA is renewing TV and uses several platforms and they going to get about $75 Billion and they do not draw the viewers to justify that.

Then we have the lowly WNBA, current contract worth about $60 Million and they want a raise also to maybe $100 Million except the only person drawing a crowd is Caitlyn Clark.

*Then why would anyone watch?*
If they’re busy screwing the fans and getting $1 of taxpayer money it’s not someone else’s issue. That means congress gets involved just like they did when the sold out games(72 hour rule) were required to be televised. Sounds like the NFL is back to it’s old tricks but only if congress doesn’t let’s them. It shouldn’t have to but democrats always take the lead in this fight for the common folk. The GOP ends up looking bad and stupid-missed opportunities.

The democrats end up taking credit for taking on the greedy rich. When our answer is less government we’re giving the NFL an inch and they’re taking a mile. That’s why we’re the stupid party.

I lost total interest in watching about 10 years ago. I had to be reminded this year the Super Bowl was on. It was past halftime this year befire I even realized it.

Also, it was a better world when actually winning a title meant a nice financial windfall for the winning players. Now the money they get for winning is a drop in the bucket compared to their salaries.

I think it was the late Lyle Alzado who said when he saw his opponent he was thinking, “He’s trying to steal my money!”

I remember one story where a Pittsburgher and his friends watched the FRanco Harris Immaculate Reception game in December of 1972 on an old late 1940’s era TV with rabbit ears because the local stations in Pittsburgh were blacked out since not all seats in Three River’s Stadium were not sold out. They were trying to pull in WJAC from Johnstown, PA on channel 6 since it was out of the blackout zone to watch the game.

I’ve been to exactly one NFL game, in 1979. After the game we had access to Tom Landry’s office where I got my photo taken with a Superbowl trophy.

I got to see Herschel Walker beat the Deadskins in Texas Stadium. Upper deck, in the corner. ALL of the game’s action happened in the far end zone. Worth it.

I do think that is a suite with 26 seats. Expensive but not a single seat and it is a private suite.
