Russian President Vladimir Putin's meeting with an ally of the Wagner Group signals his struggle to address setbacks in the Ukraine conflict.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is taking decisive steps to address growing challenges as he seeks to regain control over his struggling military campaign in Ukraine.
On May 2, Putin met with Alexei Dyumin, the governor of Russia's Tula Oblast, and a known associate of the Wagner Group, at his Novo-Ogaryovo residence in Moscow Oblast.
The meeting has raised questions about the stability of Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu's position, signalling Putin's increasing desperation in the face of unmet military goals.
Dyumin, who was closely associated with Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin during the tumultuous events of 2022 and 2023, presented Putin with a report outlining Tula Oblast's contributions to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
He discussed key issues such as housing for Russian soldiers, strengthening Russia's defence industrial base, and improving the regional medical system.
The timing of the meeting is crucial. It occurred just days after the high-profile arrest of Russian Deputy Defence Minister Timur Ivanov, a close ally of Shoigu, and ahead of the anticipated presidential inauguration on May 7.

Yes, they’re a bloodthirsty bunch, those zeepers.
Yah, another laugh fest from the followers of Goebbels. Just like the latest from Hamas — “there are not pictures of Jewish citizens being killed. That never happened.”
You and your sources claimed: Putin was dead and Russia was using a body double in his place. That Putin was dying from blood, stomach and thyroid cancer...two years ago.
That Russia was running out of missiles and ammo...two years ago.
That Western sanctions would destroy the Russian economy. Two years later, Russia's economy is growing faster than our economy and almost every other Western economy.
Lies, lies and more lies. That's all you've got.

The large majority of aid can be classified as economic or military. Humanitarian aid falls under economic objectives, as defined by the source. Military aid includes training, equipment and weapons but may not include some Department of Defense funding such as missiles or other classified spending. Negative values reflect instances when the State Dept’s USAID agency cancels or makes a downward adjustment of grants or contracts. Dollars are adjusted to match constant 2022 inflation.
