**How do you go down the road with the bed UP and not know it?....**
With old school controls just inside the driver’s door, if he was running around with the power-take-off (PTO) still engaged, all it needed was the up-down hydraulic flow valve lever moved by a seat belt catching on it.
You would think that the driver would look in the mirror once in awhile or at least think “why is this truck running like a dog right now?”
Bingo. How could that person driving the car next to it not see what was going to happen?
In my early work years I was a construction equipment operator as well as a truck driver. One gets used to the sounds and vibrations each unit makes and can easily tell when something is amiss.
Regarding going down the road with the box raised, the unit will handle differently as well as the sounds will be different - that’s clue #1. Periodic looking out the rear view mirrors would also catch it. The PTO will be engaged and made a noise all of its own.
I’ve followed big rigs with flat tires flopping around with blue smoke coming from them as they were about to catch fire. The drivers just keep on going.
