Americans spend billions of dollars every year on dietary supplements that claim to promote almost every aspect of our health. But how much do you know about the supplements you’re taking? A recent government study found that nearly 60 percent of adults take vitamins, minerals, fish oil, herbal capsules, melatonin, probiotics and other types of dietary supplements.

Same source, from 2020...

No, you probably can’t ‘boost’ your immune system to prevent coronavirus. Here’s why.

SSDD.

A lot of them are made in China, what could go wrong?

But prolonged fasting on a regular basis can remove inflammatory markers, inflammatory markers, improve gut microbiota, enhance cellular repair, and remove waste from the body etc. There are supplements (and foods !) that do the same.

I have been taking fish oil, vitamin D, and vitamin E on a daily basis for nearly 30 years now.

Vitamin D is the one that I think really does something. Fish oil, I guess. Vitamin E seems to be derided.

Don’t think it has hurt me, though.

But for the Fish Oil, I did see it was a Canadian Company that “sources its fish from Peru” and has, besides the Canadian address...a Chinese address, which means it gets its fish anuses and fish testicles that it gets the oil out of, from the huge fleet of ocean-raping fishing armadas the Communists send around the oceans of the world to vacuum the seas of fish...

Sigh.

Kombucha and sauerkraut have become staples in our diet for this reason. It also helps to “eat local.” Anyone who’s lived in the same region for more than 5 years would benefit from eating foods grown and native to the region. They often help reduce inflammation and allergic response for instance to pollens from local flora.

It’s always best to get one’s nutrients from a healthy, well-balanced diet.

Get supplements as needed as, you guessed it, a supplement to that. :-)

As for fasting, we do 12 hour fasts. Have an early dinner and then, usually, nothing til breakfast the next morning.

Works for us.

In some cases, even the medical field is getting in on the action. And it can lead to disasterous results.

As many on this site know, I’m a type II diabetic, I have posted on this site for this illness for many years, and I can’t believe just how stupid even the medical field can be.

A drug that has been vastly over prescribed for weight loss in healthy people is Ozempic. Ozempic is used for type 2 diabetes to improve blood sugar levels in adults and also to lower the risk of major cardiovascular events like stroke, heart attack, or death for adults with type 2 diabetes with heart disease.

It has never been approved for weight loss by the FDA and this drug has risks of drug interactions for those taking Ozempic. The FDA regulates supplements only to ensure accurate labeling and safe manufacturing, like other food products. Serious side effects, including allergic reactions, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), increased thyroid cancer risk, gallstones, and swelling of the pancreas.

I have been pulled off the drug, and another one prescribed, because I couldn’t get it due to over use of doctors using it for weightloss and the pharmacies I have access to can’t get it. So a lot of people are trusting it to aid them in weight loss and it is misleading and can be deadly. I’m sure you can imagine a person passing out due to hypoglycemia not knowing why and not having access to glucagon to get their numbers up before they die.

On the topic of supplements, anyone else notice how Nestle has destroyed the brand Garden of Life?

It’s a travesty. An abomination.

You can go quite awhile on just potatoes and buttermilk but if you’re not doing heavy labor, you’ll probably get fat.

I think you need a magnesium supplement after awhile.

So if you want to take on the irish diet, get blood tests to see what you’re deficient in and supplement.

Most supplements are made in China. And that includes the tons of crap that’s put in cereals, bread, processed foods in general. Remember when Chinese kibble was used in American dog food and our dogs died? A warning to the wise...

I had a doctor suggest the generic ozempic if I wasn’t satisfied with my weight loss. I have 10 lbs I’m trying to lose and I was really surprised it was so freely suggested. So, yes, it looks like everyone is pushing it, regardless of side effects, and cost. Having said that, I eat really well (all grown here) but also take a lot of supplements: the covid protocol, magnesium, fish oil...

What happened with Garden of Life? I used to use their protein powder, but not paying attention I guess.

I’ve been on Metformin and Glipizide since 2018, and it’s helped get my BSL (Blood Sugar Level) down under 150, from much higher levels.

If you have a Type 2 Ping list, pls add me.

The only supplement I take on a long term basis is NMN and only because it isn’t available naturally in large enough quantities, although I do get plenty of B3 through wild salmon, kale, walnuts, etc. Fasting can have both positive and negative effects on the immune system, depending on the duration and type of fasting. IF now is 19-20 hrs but it does temporarily suppress the immune system (until re-eating) so during Covid it was more like 14-16 and I’m not doing 24 anymore. Hope there is a mimicking pill for this soon. :)
