You have touched on one of my particular beefs.
Participation trophies are wrong on every level. Purportedly, “for the children” the idea is promoted by “well meaning” virtue signaling busybodies and destroys the moral compass of those it is supposedly cherishing. One of my sons was 8 about 22 years ago when I first heard about the obscene concept. I was revolted but I never could have guessed at the extent of the damage it would cause.

When my son got a participation trophy, I took it from him and threw it out. Then I explained to him why I did it and helped him develop life skills which the teachers refused to do. He is now very successful in his field and recently thanked my wife and I on how he was brought up.
Back in the late 80s my wife and I started hearing the public school teachers start using the buzzword, "Self-Esteem" in regards to teaching as well as in sports.
We talked about the disastrous consequences that would follow and we were 100% correct.
the extent of the damage it would cause.
because they “tried “ and “ intended to do well”.
Trying always has an element of failure built in from the start. “I will try to be at your party on Friday night” means “aint gonna be there”.
Yoda had it right, “Do or Not Do. There is no try”. Or something something, I try to remember.
