....In 2024 Kristi Noem, a strong contender to be named running mate to Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, has managed to go one further – by admitting killing a dog of her own.
“Cricket was a wirehair pointer, about 14 months old,” the South Dakota governor writes in a new book, adding that the dog, a female, had an “aggressive personality” and needed to be trained to be used for hunting pheasant....By taking Cricket on a pheasant hunt with older dogs, Noem says, she hoped to calm the young dog down and begin to teach her how to behave. Unfortunately, Cricket ruined the hunt, going “out of her mind with excitement, chasing all those birds and having the time of her life”.
Noem describes calling Cricket, then using an electronic collar to attempt to bring her under control. Nothing worked. Then, on the way home after the hunt, as Noem stopped to talk to a local family, Cricket escaped Noem’s truck and attacked the family’s chickens, “grabb[ing] one chicken at a time, crunching it to death with one bite, then dropping it to attack another”.
Cricket the untrainable dog, Noem writes, behaved like “a trained assassin”.
When Noem finally grabbed Cricket, she says, the dog “whipped around to bite me”. Then, as the chickens’ owner wept, Noem repeatedly apologised, wrote the shocked family a check “for the price they asked, and helped them dispose of the carcasses littering the scene of the crime”.
Through it all, Noem says, Cricket was “the picture of pure joy”.
“I hated that dog,” Noem writes, adding that Cricket had proved herself “untrainable”, “dangerous to anyone she came in contact with” and “less than worthless … as a hunting dog”.
“At that moment,” Noem says, “I realised I had to put her down.”

Can you set aside your antipathy toward the source and simply focus on direct quotes from her book?
I pray she is not part of POTUS Trump’s team.
I’m an animal lover myself but I don’t have a problem putting down an animal that is out of control. There are times such as in this case when it’s the appropriate thing to do.
I would eat a goat like that if I were hard-up for food, but...not otherwise. I have heard that gamey goat is NASTY as all get out. Someone I knew told me it made her gag, it was that bad. I’ve never eaten goat, so I don’t know.
Like I said, if things were so tight I had to eat it, I would, but only in that instance.
No
Deal is so sanitized these days. If one wants to respect life you experience the death of an animal, only then can you respect all life.
On the farm we didn’t have money to spend at the vet, we got a new dog.
There was a reason Jewish sacrifice was to be real, not a label on a pkg of hot dogs.
Hokey-dokey then. When Breibart quotes the same words I’ll await your commentary.
Well that's quite another thing entirely. My grandparents knew that a chicken killing dog had to be put down, DRT. My parents knew the logic of that belief. No dog can be allowed to mess with food on the table. My parents and my in-laws believed that a dog was just a dog.
‘they say’ goat stew is delicious- ive never had it but it i think woudl be like lamb stew, only maybe a little gamier- lamb stew is delicious- we often will save the lamb bones, and drippings, and make a beef stew and add it to the stew- it ramps up the flavor by 100-
Indeed
Oh yes, sadly so.
First time it kills chickens, later perhaps, if the dog owner has some really bad luck…somebody‘s child?
The Guardian = UK’s NYT
I have eaten goat, it was good.
I cannot imagine eating intact grown male. Their reek is sp powerful it gets into the milk of the females. Their own flesh would be nauseating.
So? Farm life is serious business.
She just killed her chances of being a VP pick. It seemed to me she was more concerned about the lack of hunting skills her dog had than anything else. Dogs will go after chickens. My dog killed a baby rabbit. If you take on the responsibility of owning a dog, train them well. If your dog cannot live around chickens, etc., take them to the humane society for adoption. The fact that she admitted that she killed a dog shows me that she is not intelligent at all, and should not be VP.
[[On the farm we didn’t have money to spend at the vet, we got a new dog.]]
Exactly- We didn’t hand off our problem animals to others to deal with either- we dealt with whatever needed to be done- sick animals, wounded (from predators) or whatever- we just did what had to be done- it wasn’t pretty or nice or fun- but leaving animals to suffer was worse for them-
Then came time to process the chickens, ducks, geese, lams, pigs etc- all part of the cycle of life-
We always ad our favorite animals th0ough- and it was a bit sad to see their time come-
I killed many of my dogs and many more of neighbors dogs for killing my chickens.
Ah, paper training is just gross. Get them a doggy door and let them go outside as God intended.
I know people in apartments have dogs, but I wouldn't.
The fact that she admitted that she killed a dog shows me that she is not intelligent at all, and should not be VP.
This is true of any animal, cows, bulls, hogs, wild animals.
I’m fine with putting down a bad dog, either their own, or one that is attacking someone.
Everyone should be able to do it.
