Dr. Montgomery chose a kidney from among those genetically modified pigs at United Therapeutics to implant inside Pisano. The pig's kidney was also outfitted with the pig's thymus gland to further reduce the chances of rejection.
Montgomery's plan seemed to work. After the pig kidney was implanted in Pisano, it began producing urine almost immediately, causing doctors and nurses to erupt in cheers right there in the operating room.

They are planning on using pancreas’ from these genetically modified pigs on type 1 diabetics. If this works it will make many lives better.

The brave donor pig was selfless and should be recognized as an example of a pigatarian

As someone who has had first-hand experience with kidney issues and dialysis, this is another great step. She still has to wait and see if rejection takes this away.
Xenotransplantation has been in the labs for many years. The significant problem has been rejection, but a few companies have engaged in the gene modification of animals to address this issue. It's complicated, but the research seems to be bearing fruit.
While I know it's quite popular to mock the whole idea, the idea is hope for thousands of people who deal with the issue. I just hope and pray that those making the snarky comments don't fall into the same category someday.

They offered my father a pig valve for his heart 35 years ago. I am impressed by the feat of medicine, but not totally surprised.

Good to know. And hopefully the by products did not go to waste (chops, roasts, bacon, sausage…).
