Here's what you need to understand:

1. Ukraine is roughly the size of Texas, or about 233,000 square miles.

2. After Russia's first invasion in 2014, Russians occupied roughly 7% of Ukrainian territory -- 16,000 square miles.

3. In Russia's second invasion, by the end of 2022 and net of Ukrainian liberations, Russians occupied another ~7%, 17,000 square miles, making Russia's total conquests roughly 33,000 square miles or 14% of Ukraine's internationally recognized 2013 borders.

4. In 2023, again net of Ukrainian liberations, Russians occupied another ~200 square miles (notably Bakhmut), bringing their total to ~ 33,257 square miles, still ~14% of Ukraine's territory.

5. In 2024, year to date, Russians have added another circa 30 square miles of conquered Ukrainian territory (notably Avdiivka), bringing Russia's total to 33,387 square miles (still 14%), at a cost estimated to be well over 60,000 Russian casualties and 2,000 vehicles.

Bottom line: per month in 2024, year to date, Russians have added less than half the Ukrainian territory they averaged in 2023 per month, and at the cost in Russian casualties and equipment of roughly double 2023's rates.

Of course, it's often said that Russia's manpower and equipment resources are unlimited, but are they really?
