"Russians have been on a slow roil and gaining momentum the last month.
Situation on the front lines...." Ukrainians have fought defensively since last fall, with levels of success depending primarily on ammunition.
- In 2023 Russians fought offensively around Bakhmut and then stopped Ukraine's summer counter-offensive before returning to offense around Avdiivka in the fall.
- In February, 2024, Ukrainians retreated from Avdiivka, due to a lack of ammunition.
- Since February, Russians have pushed their lines about 5 miles west of Avdiivka, with a very recent salient driving around 10 miles northwest of Avdiivka.
Overall, in 2024 year-to-date, Russians seem to have gained around 30 square miles of Ukrainian territory, at a cost estimated around 2,000 vehicles and 60,000 casualties, or roughly 65 vehicles and 2,000 casualties per square mile.
On defense, Ukrainian casualties are said to be one-third of Russia's overall, though one-tenth during Russian "Meat Wave" assaults on prepared Ukrainian defenses.
So, on days when Russians are estimated to suffer over 1,000 casualties in "Meat Wave" assaults, Ukrainians likely suffered around 100.
Ukraine is roughly the size of Texas, and still has around 200,000 square miles under Ukrainian control.
