As Major League Baseball celebrates Jackie Robinson and his pioneering contributions to the game, I can’t help but think about the fact that the league is reporting a historically low number of Black American players in its ranks: only 6%.
I think this is a teachable moment at a time when diversity efforts across various arenas (no pun intended) have come under attack. Major League Baseball, unfortunately, is a prime example of what it looks like to talk the talk without always walking the walk.

Given the demographics of the nations with organized baseball, including Latin Americans, Asians, etc. 6% isn’t so small.

Kids in America (black, white, whatever) don’t play baseball.
That is why there are so many Hispanics and Japanese in MLB.
Seriously? Some kids may play and follow baseball, but are baseball players really their heroes? Probably more young Americans of all races know more about basketball players and rappers than about baseball players.
Well we didn’t have “DEI” until fairly recently, so this is garbage...if anything it would be evidence DEI achieved the reverse, right?
Plenty of black professional athletes. Especially the NBA, but also the NFL, is much more rewarding.
It’s not a problem. But you are conflating the general population, which is just over 50% female, with players in a men’s sports league.
Name me one MLB Black person that went to play FB or BB...

There are something like 736 NHL players. It is likely they are counting the minors as well when they talk about professional sports.
I don’t pay much attention to sports at all. I probably could not tell you any names that haven’t worked themselves into popular culture.
They are also different sports that you have to be playing since childhood in order to have a chance.
Rodney Peete was the starting 3B at USC too.
If blacks were proportionally represented in MLB, there would be 12%, not 6%.

Most of the Banana players are good old southern boys and many are Christians. The Party Boys consist of many Christians and are totally down to earth.
