A brazen Los Angeles cash heist on Easter weekend in which thieves cracked a safe and got away with as much as $30 million is believed to be one of the largest such heists in U.S. history.
The heist has triggered rampant speculation among a public long infatuated with daring burglaries and hefty criminal paydays.
L.A. police and the FBI were tight-lipped Friday about any new developments in their joint investigation, but police Cmdr. Elaine Morales told The Los Angeles Times, which broke news of the crime, that thieves were able to breach the money storage facility in the suburban Sylmar neighborhood and then crack into the safe containing the cash.
Media reports identified the facility as a location of GardaWorld, a global cash management and security company. The Canada-based company, which also operates fleets of armored cars, did not immediately respond Friday to a request for comment from The Associated Press.
Police said officers received a call for service at the facility at 4:30 a.m. Easter Sunday, and aerial footage from KABC-TV showed a large hole on the side of the building that appeared to be boarded up with plywood. WHAT ARE EXPERTS SAYING?
Jim McGuffey, an armored car and physical security expert, called the theft “a shock.” Any such facility should have two alarm systems and a seismic motion detector right on the safe, he said, as well as additional motion sensors throughout the building.
“For that kind of money, you don’t just walk in and walk out with it,” he told AP. “A facility should be protected from the top to the bottom and the sides.”
Randy Sutton, a former police detective in New Jersey and Las Vegas who investigated major crimes and high-end burglaries, said a crime of this magnitude had likely been planned for months.

Sutton said it's likely the criminals who pulled of the caper already had a plan in place for how to launder that much money.
“It's an interesting question: How do you get rid of that amount of cash?” he said. “I know it's a quandary we'd all like to have, but the reality is these criminals probably had that in their repertoire.”
Read of this earlier in the week, but it seems they are releasing a few more details now.
For safety reasons, I keep MY $30M in my mattress. It’s a little lumpy, but you get used to it. ;)
I’ve seen a couple movies that had this theme.
The thieves are either found dead in a ditch, or they are never found.
What’s the big deal? That much, and more is stolen by California politicians every day.
On a C17 to Iran, perhaps??
Dudes from the show ‘Animal Kingdom’ probably did it. NOT the one with marlin perkins.
Maybe it was something as simple as organized crime, back in the 70s the Mafia in NY stole millions from Lufthansa at the JFK airport, they had an inside connection and to this day no one has been convicted for the crime nor has the money ever been recovered, this crime was memorialized in the movie Goodfellas.
This is the second bloody nose for Garda who lost millions worth of clients’ jewelry when one of their trucks was parked at a truck stop and one guard slept while the other went into the station for food.
And here the leftists thought they were immune from the consequences of importing criminals.
Somehow they deceived themselves into thinking it would only affect flyover country and the hoi polloi.
Well, guess again. The criminals are not that stupid. They know where the real money is.
Going after Joe-Rural-American is going to end up with them more likely shot than scoring any significant amount of money.
Ridiculous that they can’t guard this amount of cash. Most likely they had help on the inside.
I wouldn't want to have that quandary, it's likely to get them busted.
“Three can keep a secret if two of them are dead.” ~ Benjamin Franklin ;)
Not that I ever WOULD engage in a heist such as this, but I can’t think of anyone else in my circle that I would trust enough to go in on something like this in the first place! Everyone I know has a big mouth, LOL!
Thunderbolt and Lightfoot.
Lots of countries accept US Cash for deposits with no reporting to anyone, see PANAMA. I would bet it has already been deposited in a Panamanian or Cayman Islands bank. YES it is LEGAL, the Politicians set it up so they can Launder their BRIBE MONEY, they just don’t like other people using their laws for themselves.
The Codys... Love that show.. Boys could probably pull it off..
Having worked in the secure facility guarding business, I think it’s a sure thing that this was an inside job. The many alarms that were not activated, or not responded to, makes it a sure thing.
Even disabling the alarms sets off an alarm.
Donate it to members of congress and democrat groups. They don’t ask questions.
$30 million? What’s the big deal?
In Biden’s America, that’ll buy a case of peanut butter, a case of Saltine crackers, a Burger King Whopper, and a couple gallons of gasoline.
Inside job...

So.......McGuffey is investigating a MacGuffen??
