Digging a hole where the body is curled up requires less energy then digging a hole to lay the body out straight.

So you could dig a hole that is deeper, which is something to be desired to prevent animals from digging up the body for the same amount of energy expenditure that you would spend on a shallower grave where the body was laid out.
