The official statement is that the large number of extra people, estimated to be one million more than usual where I live in the Niagara Falls area, could overwhelm traffic, emergency services and cellphone networks. More people means more traffic, more accidents, possible inability to access hospitals in emergencies, much greater demand for food in grocery stores and restaurants. There are about 88,000 residents in Niagara Falls, Ontario, but only about 12,000 guest rooms. I don’t know where those million people will be staying. We’ve been told that every hotel room in Buffalo and north through to Toronto is booked. I know there are no vacancies where I live. My son has also been placed on call from Friday through Tuesday. He’s a linesman and they’re prepared to have some electrical emergencies of an unspecified nature. I don’t know if this is a case of governmental horrible-izing and overplanning, or if the extra precaution is warranted. I think they’ve chosen to plan for the worst, rather than put themselves in the position of having to apologize on Tuesday for underestimating the impact on the infrastructure. The weather is forecast to be mostly sunny and 57°. Let’s hope we have only good memories when it’s over.
