KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — The Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association was heavily damaged Wednesday after a U-Haul truck crashed into the building.

The crash was reported about 11 a.m. at the shelter’s location in the 1000 block of Greenbrier Street, according to Metro 911.

The shelter said in a Facebook post that the incident happened where there were kennels but only one dog suffered an injured leg.

The building was heavily damaged in the incident. Firefighters helped construct scaffolding to keep the structure upright while the vehicle was moved.

The Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association said it is now in dire need of fosters.

“We are currently in a state of emergency,” the shelter said in the social media post.

Community members responded to the call, and nearly 150 dogs were transferred into foster care Wednesday, according to the Humane Association. Another 12 dogs are left in the building and are in need of a home.

The shelter will be closed Thursday, but staff will be on site from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to continue cleanup efforts and coordinate with fosters.

The driver told investigators an accelerator in the vehicle got stuck leading up to the crash, according to Charleston police.

The Kanawha County Commission said it has been in contact with leadership at the animal shelter and is prepared to make a “special contribution” to assist.

The commission said the most pressing issue is foster care for the animals involved. Those interested in volunteering to care for the animals are asked to contact Marissa Hsu at 681-319-1999.

With all due respect, is this really a big deal? It would have been better though if the truck ran into an Antifa gathering.

If it’s anything like our city/county animal shelter...95% of the dogs are pits. Sad really.

As a old farmer once told our local shelter.

There is nothing there a couple boxes of .22lr will not cure.

We have no shortage of dogs or cats.
