My tax return is being held so the IRS can review it. The letter says they want to verify several things including “Itemized Deductions”!
I use the standard deduction.
I’m guessing it has to do with my voter registration as a republican.
Anyone else experiencing this?
Cheers!

You’ll be getting another letter any day now.
Sounds “canned”, bet a whole lot of those will be going out deserved or not and are a tactical excuse to delay returns.
Did you list your 40 year old son as a dependent?
There is always a set number that are randomly selected and they don’t have anything that sets off any alarms.
They are trying their best to keep our refunds if they can. Pretty soon nobody will ever get any back that they paid in owed or not.
That’s definitely a possibility, unfortunately. You are likely owed too little to make it worth fighting for.
Luck of the draw most likely.
Are you logged in?
“You are likely owed too little to make it worth fighting for.”
That is an extremely important statement you make. Give an inch and they will take a mile. The new norm is “extreme obstruction or diversion” with every tool available and contrived to “make it not worth the trouble”. And not just government, banking and big business does the very same thing. Especially with “customer service”.
They are well designed deceptive tactics that create an undeserved profit. And if we slack off and keep allowing this it will just get worse and become standard accepted protocol. We need to quit being lazy and make that extra effort forcing them to make it right.
Maybe something like your last name is Smith and not Jimenez?
Probably nothing to do with taxes. Just opening the door for more nefarious actions.
There’s a reason they’re hiring, or already have hired, 87,000 armed employees.
From Yahoo Finance, which isn’t exactly conservative:
“The Internal Revenue Service is hiring armed special agents across the US.
“The agency’s Criminal Investigation unit wants people who are legally allowed to carry guns.
“These agents must work at least 50 hours weekly and be on-call 24/7 – even during vacations.
“The Internal Revenue Service is hiring special agents who shouldn’t be afraid of using ‘deadly force.’
“Criminal Investigation, the law enforcement branch of the IRS, is looking for agents across the US who can combine ‘accounting skills with law enforcement skills to investigate financial crimes,’ according to a job posting on its website.”
Every year. I got some irons in the fire. And I’m a white Christian male.....
Not yet, but we just filed.
One of the most overlooked things that get you audited is getting paid for work on a 1099 and either never getting the 1099 or forgetting to file it on you taxes.
Other things in this same category is investment returns, if you receive capital gains on a mutual fund and fail to file the 1099, you will get audited because the investment company will file one on their side.
That got my wife and I audited one time for just this reason.
I would think long and hard on any income you received that might not have been accounted for in your tax filing.

I agree, that too. There is real communism brewing in our centralized government. But always present with government is obstruction and incompetence as a normal standard of operation.
Confuse them, open your front door and sit facing it with your hands up!

Our refund gets rolled over into this year’s tax payment, so I am guessing
they won’t bother to review our tax return. It is almost like some kind of extortion.
Are you sure it’s from the IRS?
