The police have them because, as they explain, they need to have the same arms that criminals possess to level the field.
You, OTOH, are not allowed a level playing field with both criminals and police.
Very good points. However, what about situations such as when a bunch of Afghani goat-humpers drove out the Soviet military after ten years of guerilla warfare, despite being vastly outnumbered, outmanned, out-gunned, out-bombed, and out-technologied? Does strength of will trump tactically superior weaponry? Or was it because the goat-humpers had something we currently don’t; i.e., UNITY?
Often times, especially involving the federal level (or big blue areas), there is little or no difference between the two.
