Aren’t they running in different party primaries? If so, who cares which is ahead?

No. In California, there is one primary. The two highest votes run in the November election. That means it's Garbey Vs Schiff. The primary totals don't matter at this point.

And, Garvey has no hope. Dems got 4M votes in the Primary and Reps for 2.6M.

I voted twice for the senate spot. Once for the one in which the governor appointed the women from Maryland. I thought I was voting for someone (Garvey) to go to dc now and be sworn in till the “permanent election” in November. What happened to the short term seat.

Ugh, it’s very different than when I voted out there. Thankfully I escaped California 40 years ago.
