Eric Carmen, who became an icon of power pop as the frontman of the Raspberries before achieving even bigger hits as a solo artist in the 1970s and ’80s, has died at age 74.
The news came in a message from his wife, Amy Carmen, on the singer’s website.
“It is with tremendous sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of Eric Carmen,” she wrote. “Our sweet, loving and talented Eric passed away in his sleep, over the weekend. It brought him great joy to know, that for decades, his music touched so many and will be his lasting legacy. Please respect the family’s privacy as we mourn our enormous loss. ‘Love Is All That Matters… Faithful and Forever.'”
The latter quote from Carmen’s wife is a callback to the song “Love Is All That Matters,” from Carmen’s 1977 solo album “Boats Against the Current.”
No cause of death or exact date of Carmen’s death has been given.
Carmen first rose to fame with the Raspberries’ breakout hit, “Go All the Way.” After the band broke up in the mid-’70s, he established himself as a successful solo artist with “All by Myself” and “Never Gonna Fall in Love Again.” His run of hits continued into the ’80s with the “Footloose” song “Hungry Eyes.”
More to come…
Dang
Um it was a Dirty Dancing song.
He was very very conservative on his Twitter page.
Eric Cartman is dead? YOU BASTARDS!
No use pretending things can still be right There's really nothing more to say I'll get along without your kiss goodnight Just close the door and walk away Never gonna fall in love again I don't want to start with someone new 'Cause I couldn't bear to see it end Just like me and you No, I never want to feel the pain Of remembering how it used to be Never gonna fall in love again Just like you and me At first we thought that love was here to stay The summer made it seem so right But like the sun we watched it fade away From morning into lonely night Never gonna fall in love again I don't want to start with someone new 'Cause I couldn't bear to see it end Just like me and you No, I never want to feel the pain Of remembering how it used to be Never gonna fall in love again Just like you and me Never gonna fall in love again I don't want to start with someone new 'Cause I couldn't bear to see it end Just like me and you No, I never want to feel the pain Of remembering how it used to be Never gonna fall in love again Just like you and me Never gonna fall in love again I don't want to start with someone new 'Cause I couldn't bear to see it end Just like me and you
Suddenly the age of 74 seems “so young”.
Eric was truly talented.
Kind of a shock. Really liked a lot of his stuff. His music had a real poignancy to it that I connected with.
They write an obituary and they give it all the attention of a McDonalds drive thru window.
I was referring to Hungry Eyes the article says it was from Footlose
“Eric Cartman is dead? YOU BASTARDS!”
The anal probe finally did him in?
I being but a lad listening to his songs on the radio brought me a voice along with my own.I listened to the words and went from there. His songs were thought out and something everyone experiences at one time or another. I hope he passed quietly and is at peace.
He was?
Yup, I think his page was taken down. He praised Trump and posted some Q stuff.
Aw, man RIP.
Loved the power pop sound of the Raspberries. Never thought Go All the Way was their best. Always preferred Let’s Pretend and I Wanna Be With You.
Rest In Peace, Eric.
