Would a cross section of that data reveal an even increase among multiple groups studied, say Canadian or Amish, etc?

“Typically, a 18%-to-20% gratuity represents satisfaction.”

It used to be 10%

Lately I've been going to the butcher shop and getting the thickest ribeye I can buy. Yes, super expensive but cheaper than ordering same at a restaurant.

Cast iron skillet at home, heat high with avocado oil. Salted steaks at least six hours prior. Three minutes on stovetop before flipping. Another three minutes on second side. Flip again and put in 400 degree oven for another five minutes before flipping again and bring to stovetop in which I melt a quarter stick of butter to spoon over the top with garlic cloves and pepper.

Let rest for 10 minutes.

Then eat.

Before they taxed tips, I was grateful for anything I was tipped.
I tip for service and good food only.

My mother worked at a drive-in decades ago. She had skates
and worked for tips only.

Waitressed weekends in college and had to be there at 5a.m.

Customers in the morning were still drunk and tipped fabulously.

Afternoon they were hung over and barely tipped at all!

Gee, what effect does cleaning the sticky table, checking on us, getting the orders right and effective/timely service have on tips?

Holy crap.

I’ve noticed the bill often has tips suggested for 15, 18, and 20%.

Most base their suggestions on the food total. Lately, many are suggesting a tip calculated on the total including sales tax, inflating the tip.

I was very surprised at how much money I was spending at restaurants. No more.

My SO and I regularly patronized a restaurant during the COVID lock-downs. Every week, we would have dinner there. Through the renovation. Through the various scares.

The COVID panic subsided. The two of us arrived at our usual time. To be greeted with "You smell, don't come back." I still don't understand the guy's problem.

So, we didn't. That was $60-80 a week that wasn't going to them. It adds up.

When Silicon Valley Bank happened, I started buying gold and silver. I now have a nice kitty for when the dollar and the banks both crash. And all because I didn't throw the cash away on "the experience." Who knew?

An even better and more effective trick... would be to actually provide good, fast, efficient service. What a novel concept in this day and age.

Went to a local restaurant yesterday for the first time since our a-hole governor shut everything down during covid. Our waitress was one we recognized. I tipped lavishly, as her life was probably crap during the shutdown.

...they also include the sales tax as the base price for the tip. As it is, as long as waiters are paid a ‘living wage’ they no longer get tips from me, since they already have enough to live on (by definition), which is NOT the case for many, if not most, other workers.

Waitresses at Waffle House are notorious for talking to each other in front of patrons about how their babies are going to starve if they don’t get better tips. After falling for it the first time and hearing it again I quit eating there.

rises in the average tip go from 22.86% to 25.38% — an overall 11% relative increase.

Actually given that this ignores how inflation has driven up the underlying restaurant tab, tips are going up even more than 11%, more like 11% plus inflation.

The correct term here would be “an illustration of a smiley face”. “Emoji” refers to characters typed on a computer, “ji” being Japanese for “character”, as in alphabet character.

These young writers are so stupid.
