Identical twins from Minnesota are accused of swapping places after one of them, allegedly driving high on a rural highway, rear-ended an Amish horse-drawn carriage and killed two children.
Police spent months building the case before announcing charges.
But, according to one expert, the damning evidence might not be as strong as it appears.
Prosecutors now allege Samantha Jo Petersen was behind the wheel Sept. 25, 2023, when a motor vehicle slammed into a horse-drawn carriage, killing two children and injuring their two siblings.
It was not her identical twin sister, Sarah Beth Petersen, who took responsibility at the scene, who was driving, the prosecutors say.

No sympathy for the doper twins. But still, it’s deranged for the state to allow black horse buggies on any highway. The throwbacks clopping along at 3 MPH are a disaster waiting to happen.

Well, one of ‘em is going to jail....of course this being Minnesota who knows.
I looked for the age of the twins and didn’t see it.
Guess they learned a lesson there - at the expense of two children..Hopefully, they’ll both be given enough time in the slammer to think about their behavior but that won’t help the family who has lost two children.

Go back and view old footage of cities around 1910 approximately.
Trolleys, cars, horse drawn carts, pedestrians etc… A little haphazard but they got by because normal, responsible people usual do. It’s not that hard to accommodate Amish buggies on the road but drunk, high and careless idiots who drive reckless are dangerous to All others on the roadways. Moronic stupidity gets others and themselves often killed. Oh those ‘English’.
They called it a rural highway in the Post article, but it was likely a 2 lane county road.
I found this description from the day after the accident:
“ At 8:25 a.m., a 2005 Toyota 4Runner driving southbound on Fillmore County Road 1 collided with a southbound two-wheeled horse-drawn Amish buggy near the intersection with County Road 102, according to the Fillmore County Sheriff’s Office.”

I live near a large Amish community. I respect them. Around here they very often pull onto the shoulder if there is one, so that they can be passed. They are very courteous people.
This driver was impaired and driving without a license. She seems to have a callous disregard for life.
Cars in 1910 were little different from buggies. Almost all were open air. And they didn’t get by, they had death, injuries and chaos.
It’s fun to fly a SPAD with no radio at Rhinebeck Aerodrome also. But flying one into Los Angeles international Airport is a stupid idea.
Modern care have a posted speed limit of 65, 75 and even 80 in places. And some throwback clip clopping along at 3 or 4 miles an hour in a black cart is outrageously dangerous. And it screws up the lives of people who hit them. Normal people have such accidents also.
Join the real world or stay on the farm. Leave the buckboard at home.
I doubt the speed limit on those country roads is more than 55 on any of them. They weren’t on an interstate or anything resembling one. Two lanes. That’s some highway!
Bet they’ll face more punishment than the New Mexico judge who got an $81 fine and kept her license:

Amish buggies don’t drive on highways and also are VERY well marked with hi viz signs. There is no excuse for not seeing them.
The only ones allowed to drive are irresponsible kids?

I know a couple of Mexican identical twins. One married a Gringa and got citizenship. The other is married to a dreamer.

In what world? Buggies, bicycles, pedestrians all travel small roads where speed limits generally max at 35.
Only idiots drive fast on back roads. School zones are 20 mph speed limit limits, so that people STOP for pedestrians.
