Could drying the stratosphere help cool the planet?
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ^ | February 28, 2024 | NOAA

Yes, but only to a small degree.

While human-caused carbon dioxide emissions are by far the most important driver of climate change, water vapor is actually the most abundant greenhouse gas, and is responsible for about half of Earth's natural greenhouse effect – the one that keeps our planet habitable.

Now, as scientists explore ways to address the impacts of climate change by removing excess heat-trapping carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and by reflecting sunshine back into space, one group of researchers has asked the question: Could removing some water vapor from the atmosphere also help mitigate climate change?

This is precisely the idea explored in a new research article published today in the journal Science Advances that authors have dubbed "intentional stratospheric dehydration" or ISD.

According to lead author Joshua Schwarz, a research physicist at NOAA's Chemical Sciences Laboratory, the ISD concept would involve dispersing small particles (known as ice nuclei) into high altitude regions of the atmosphere that are both very cold and super-saturated in water vapor. These nuclei would increase the formation of ice crystals that otherwise would not have formed.

"Pure water vapor doesn't readily form ice crystals. It helps to have a seed, a dust particle for example, for ice to form around," explained Schwarz.

If such seeds can be introduced into supersaturated air masses that are headed for the stratosphere, then some of the water vapor in that air will condense into ice and fall, thereby removing excess water vapor and dehydrating (at least partially) the stratosphere.

Why would I EVER want to cool Earth? (it’s the perfect way to kill billions of people.)

I wish the environmental whackos would stop bitching about stuff like the stratosphere, and start complaining about all the millions of square miles of pristine desert, countryside, and even urban areas that have been completely trashed and treated like open sewers by the lazy third world horde.

I think anyone who travels knows that the hallmark of the Third World is their plain old butt-laziness when it comes to dropping trash along roads, in fields, etc.

Plus using every place as an open air sewer.

"Gee I wonder why we keep getting parasites, viruses, and bacterial diseases all the time?" "Oh lets throw garbage around on our unpaved dusty roads and take dumps everywhere, and NOT build underground sewers and water supplies." "Let's breathe all that dusty garbage and human dump dust every day and then wonder why we get Strongyloides spp. infections."

"Then let's migrate to Boston and they can write us up in the NEJM for our exotic diseases that the white man lets us languish with."

I'm so tired of this bullsh*t.

I tell you what, before we throw them out of the US, we need to round them all up and have them micro-police every square inch of desert they messed up coming in here. Put them in Haz Mat suits in the Texas summer sun and clean up all the crap they left on our landscape. It's exactly what their home countries need too. Send them home to clean up their own crappy littered countries.

Which would have NO effect on the troposphere, where weather happens.

They CANNOT control the greenhouse gas of H20. Simply not possible.

All these *solutions* to a fabricated problem have the potential to backfire in a very big way. They simply DO. NOT. KNOW. what these ideas and schemes of theirs are going to do.

Besides, don’t these guys believe in science? What about evolution? They’re so worried about how the *climate change* is going to affect the earth, but completely ignore the fact that they believe that life will adapt. It has in the past and it will again.

In their hubris, they think they can control the uncontrollable and predict the unpredictable.

This is great example of how they lie, by imbedding the falsehood in the premise of the statement about something else.

Yes, excellent flick. The husband suggests seeding the stratosphere with themselves to study first hand the ice molecules forming ;) And the line from Hunt For Red October comes to mind, “You arrogant ass, you’ve killed us!”

Leave my planet alone you worthless leftist loser criminals. What gives you the right to do anything to it? I think imprisoning these anti-science/anti-reality nitwits would do the most to “help” the planet.

“While human-caused carbon dioxide emissions are by far the most important driver of climate change, water vapor is actually the most abundant greenhouse gas, and is responsible for about half of Earth’s natural greenhouse effect – the one that keeps our planet habitable.”

Okay, I call absolute BS on this. CO2 is actually one of the milder greenhouse gassed. Water Vapor reflects heat back to the surface at an insanely higher rate than CO2... its the single biggest driver of the greenhouse effect by far.

You can read a climatologist, admit this here ( https://climate.mit.edu/ask-mit/why-do-we-blame-climate-change-carbon-dioxide-when-water-vapor-much-more-common-greenhouse ) and then seem them tie themselves in knots still trying to blame CO2

There is no doubt that human activity is adding CO2 to the atmosphere, however, the doomsday scenarios are just silly. No, we are nowhere near some runaway greenhouse effect like Venus.... and as much as they like to pretend otherwise, CO2 concentrations have been much higher in the past, and those concentrations have been higher, when the earth was a giant ice cube.

The direct correlation claims between CO2 levels and global temperatures is not remotely true, though they keep portraying it to be so.

If you really wanted reduce CO2 in the atmosphere, just need to release massive amounts of sulfur into the upper atmosphere, which will bind with CO2 and bring it back down to earth. Now personally I don’t recommend mucking around with the upper atmosphere, the risk of unintended consequences could be dire indeed if we start mucking with it ... the 1815 Tabora eruption (Believed to be the largest recorded in human history) was estimated to reduce CO2 levels by 6PPM because it did blast sulfur compounds into the atmosphere worldwide which bonded to the CO2 and brought it back down to the ground.

I am all for finding cleaner energy sources, don’t get me wrong... but the doom and gloom nonsense around CO2 just has to end, because its just not remotely true.

Very true and isn’t it amazing that some people can imagine in their underdeveloped brains that they have the ability to grasp the entirety of the world in their own mind? That they can take the entirety of the space around them and grasp it all?

It’s comical because the way they act indicates that they actually think they can change the weather. Why heck, you can even change biology and turn a male into a female.

Most human minds, especially those humans who participate in NGO’s that are “saving the planet” in reality cannot grasp the space even a few hundred yards around them. How can they think they can understand the Earth and what it is doing globally? They can’t. Why not? It’s impossible.

And then, try to factor in space and its effect on Earth.
Solar output and cycles, Earth’s magnetic field, high energy space particles, etc.

I’m smart enough to know that the smartest person ever is insignificant Universally speaking.

More mass of just termites than humans. Way more mass of microbes than humans.
These are, of course, human estimates…

So the climate of the entire earth hinges on only a few part per million changes in a single trace gas. Total BS
