Part of the answer to my question of how many tenants were displaced in those buildings just on Mission Street:

Herb Caen called SF “Baghdad By The Bay” . He was very prescient.

My dad had a brief tour with the Navy in Hunter's Point. We lived in a Quonset hut. I was probably 3 or 4 at the time. I recall an Easter egg hunt occurring during our stay. The time frame was probably early 1960.

The Old San Francisco Mint at 5th and Mission was opened for business in 1874. It was the only financial institution that survived the Great San Francisco Earthquake & Fire of 1906.

Not sure it will be able to survive the devastation currently devouring this once great city.

My dad was stationed on Treasure Island in 1945 to train as a Marine radio operator for the invasion of Japan. He embarked from Fort Mason and his ship joined many others in the Pacific to form the invasion fleet. He was at sea when the a-bombs were dropped and the Pacific war ended onAug 15. He became part of the huge U.S. occupation force and got home two years later. He and mom were married Oct 11, 1941 back at the University of Idaho in Moscow.

I’ve been watching movies on YouTube and stumbled upon a Bogie movie “Tokyo Joe” about the U.S. occupation. Finished it last night. It has special meaning because of Dad’s service in the Marines in Japan.

Dad had good memories of his time in SF and in ‘74 took me to one of his favorite restaurants, the “Iron Pot.” It was still in the same location 30 years after the war!

The politicians are not being up front about the harsh truth that the cost to renovate the decayed infrastructure in these cities far exceeds any return on the investment. It's even worse because with the exception of healthcare and maybe education, industries are better served outside of a city.

Nice list...

I was stationed at Ft.Ord back in the 70’s, my favorite thing to do when I had time was visit SF and wander around the city. So much history and interesting architecture . I thought it was one of the most beautiful cities I ever visited.Would I ever go back? Not on your life, I'd rather have my memories than today's reality.

S/F could be such a beautiful city again if only it wasn’t
infested with criminals and communist...AKA Democrats.

My last visit to downtown was for a UseNIX conference. I had a room at the Nikkei hotel. Nikkei caters to a Japanese customer base. I enjoyed the stay. It was a couple blocks to the hotel where the conference was hosted. Walking between my hotel and the conference hotel can best be summed up in one word: "ick". Homeless. Streets stinking of urine and feces. That was the case pre-1991 when I left for my current employer. I was there to see my UNIX industry "co-workers". I wouldn't attend the conference again if hosted in the same place. It is far more dangerous today.

Re: Industry List (Post 35)

Yeah, it's a pretty harsh wakeup call when you look at the industry list and realize how few industries benefit from cities. It explains why cities were already in severe decline a century ago (outside of an influx of taxpayer funds for WW2) and were never going to recover.

Looking back, the urban riots in the 1960s were a foregone conclusion.

Shrewd financiers and industry heads are very aware of that almost all industries are simply far better served somewhere else other than a city.
