Our house was 19/20 of a mile from school...

A child had to live a mile away in order to get the school bus...

We walked or rode our bikes through all the grades K-12

I even ran home and back to school for a hot lunch with Mom when I was in high school...

Same here, but we got to walk through a RI forest. Crows everywhere. On weekends, I’d take my BB gun to get a shot at them, but the crows somehow always stayed out of range.

Later, I rode a bicycle until it got stolen (for the chain).

I heard of kids doing this but never knew of any.

Kids at my school either got school lunch or brought their own lunch in those old fashion metal lunch boxes that had a thermos in it. I notice the lunch boxes kids have today don’t come with a thermos.

Plus I wonder if kids could even go home for lunch the way they have schools locked down like a prison.

At our house when I was in the 1st grade, we had to walk through woods to get to school. By second grade we lived in a different House, one like yours - just slighly not far enough to take the bus - about 8/10 of a mile. Even in the winter through snow way much higher than me, it was not “oh woe is me”, it was just the way it was.

I see so many situations today where no kid walks or rides their bikes to school - either a bus or their parents take them and pick them up.
