Tucker Carlson mocked for bewilderment over Russian shopping carts that include common feature

Tucker Carlson aired a video of him at a Russian grocery store, appearing to fawn over everything from the shopping cart mechanism to the price of groceries - skipping over the part where US dollars stretch a lot farther than the ruble.

In the video, Carlson was amazed to see that the shopping carts in front of the supermarket required people to put in a ruble coin, which they'd then get back when the cart was returned.

Carlson acted like he'd never seen this feature before - despite it being pretty common across the US and most of Europe.

He then explained to his audience how it works, quipping, "There's an incentive to return it... and not just take it to your homeless encampment."

He was quickly criticized for the comment about the shopping carts, and users on X made fun of him for looking like he'd never been in a store before.

Here is a whole list of detail articles on the story and I think a few links to the way it was first covered.

Na. But look at the red around NE Ohio on this map an I think you can see why it sure seems common to me. And that map is seven years old.

They have it here at Aldi's in my town so I've seen it. But if it wasn't for Aldi's, I would be like Tucker. No idea why you would put a quarter in a cart.

We don’t have them in my town of 70,000+ which is 35 miles SW of Phoenix. We have 11 in the Phoenix metro but none in Scottsdale where I lived for 14 yrs, so they’re not ubiquitous here like Safeway or Fry’s (Kroger). They also close at 8 or 9 pm whereas every other major grocery store in the state closes at 11 pm.

“The price of food is not based on employees wages alone.

You have the manufacture and distributor costs.

A big factor is energy and fuel rates.

Our purchasing power is going down thanks to O’Biden’s policies.”

I don't deny it. Still, the labor costs are a significant factor and prices of food and services would have been lower in the low income countries even without the whole lefty nonsense.

Tucker is a pampered rich boy born with a silver spoon in his mouth.

He hates Trump immensely by his own admission, as revealed in the Dominion lawsuit against Fox.

Everything he says is a lie. He cannot be trusted. He might still occasionally be useful though.

He was not bewildered if he explained to the audience how it works.

I would not describe it as “common” though I agree he overhyped it. He also seemed amazed that food in poor countries is cheaper than in the US. He should ask the cashiers how long they work per day and what their salaries are before spending too much time talking about affordability.

I agree. Not common. The only place i've been to that does it is Aldi's. His reaction was kind of weird about it.

Closest Aldi’s is around 1,000 miles from me and I’m not in Alaska or Hawaii.
